Union, NJ – The No. 9 nationally ranked Elmira College men's volleyball team (17-6, 7-3 UVC) upped their longest winning streak in EC's four-year history to eight matches today with a 3-0 sweep over York College (16-13, 8-2 CUNYAC).
Tyler Smith '15 posted a career high 14 kills and added four digs, two assists, two block assists, and one ace in the victory.
Michael Vellutato '14 set up the attack with 27 assists and added five digs, four kills, three block assists and two aces while
Felix Garcia Ramos '16 also had a career day as he tallied a career-high eight digs, a career-high four aces and added six kills and one block assist.
Evan Clarke '15 also had a solid night as he tallied seven digs and three assists on the day.
The Soaring Eagles and the Cardinals battled early as they found themselves deadlocked at seven a piece early in the first set. York then went on a 4-0 run to take an 11-7 lead, but the Purple and Gold responded with their own 4-0 run to tie the game back up at 11-11. Both teams went back and forth the rest of the set until both teams were tied up at 20 apiece. EC then went on a 5-1 run to take the first set, 25-21.
The Purple and Gold took control of the second set early as the EC men took a 14-6 lead. The Cardinals tried to chip away at Elmira's lead and when the Cardinals were down 22-11, York went on a 4-1 run to trail 15-23. The Soaring Eagles closed out the set with two straight points, to take the second set, 25-15.
The Cardinals kicked out the third set with a 5-1 run to take an early lead. Elmira responded with a four straight points to even things up at 5-5. Both teams went back and forth until the score was tied up at 20-20. After a 4-3 run, Vellutato ended the set with a kill, giving the Purple and Gold a 25-23 win.
The Soaring Eagles will compete again tomorrow when they take on No. 13 Kean University at 12:00 p.m. and No. 15 Stevenson University at 2:00 p.m. in the second day of the Kean Tournament.
