Union, NJ -- The Elmira College men's volleyball team (18-7, 7-3 UVC) split a pair of games in the second day of the Kean Tournament. The Soaring Eagles took the first match 3-2 against No. 13 Kean University (15-7), but snapped a program record setting nine game win streak in a 0-3 loss to No. 15 Stevenson University (16-8).
Game One Recap
Elmira 3, Kean 2 – 19-25. 25-22, 25-23, 21-25, 15-11
Kean and Elmira battled early and went back and forth until both teams found themselves deadlocked at eight a piece. The Cougars then held a narrow lead until finding themselves up 20-18. Kean then went on a 5-1 run to take the first set, 25-19. EC regrouped in the second set and after both teams were tied at 21-21, the Soaring Eagles went on a 4-1 run to take the second set, 25-22. Elmira also took the third set after finding themselves tied with the Cougars and went on a 4-2 run to take a 2-1 set lead. In the fourth set, Kean came out ready to play as the Cougars started with a 5-1 run, causing EC to take a quick timeout. After the break, EC chipped away at the lead and tied up the game up at 15 apiece. Kean then went on a 10-6 run to take the fourth set, 25-21. In the fifth set, the Purple and Gold took an early 10-6 lead. The Cougars then chipped away of the lead until Kean trailed Elmira, 11-12. The Soaring Eagles then went on a 4-1 run to close out the match with the 3-2 win.
Erik Griffin '16 led the EC men with 20 kills, seven digs, five block assists, and two aces while
Michael Vellutato '14 set up the attack with a season high 57 assists, eight digs, two block assists and one kill in the win.
Rob Shade '14 led defensively with 17 digs while
Mike Ellison '16 posted 15 digs and added nine kills, one assist, one block assist, and one solo block. Also having solid performances in the first match was
Ryan Gelenitis '14 and
Dylan Kuhn '16. Gelenitis tallied 16 kills and five digs while Kuhn finished the match with 11 kills and seven block assists.
Game Two Recap
Elmira 0, Stevenson 3 – 24-26, 23-25, 20-25
Stevenson and Elmira traded points early in EC's second match of the day until both teams were all tied up at 24 apiece. The Mustangs took advantage of a couple of attacking errors by Elmira to take the first set, 26-24. Once again both teams went back and forth until they found themselves tied up at 22-22. Stevenson then went on a 3-1 run to take the second set. The Mustangs took an early 8-2 lead in the third set and EC battled back to take a 13-12 lead. But Stevenson would go on a 13-7 run to take the third set, 25-20. Griffin led the Purple and Gold offensively in the second match of the day with 16 kills while Vellutato helped out with 32 assists, 10 digs, four kills and an ace in the effort. Shade led the team defensively with 12 digs and added two assists in the match. Ellison also chipped in with eight digs while Gelenitis posted seven kills in the loss.
The Soaring Eagles will be back in action March 26
th when EC hosts Hilbert College. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
