Washington, PA -- The Elmira College field hockey team (0-5, 0-1 E8) fell 4-1 to Washington and Jefferson College (5-1, 1-0 E8) in a Empire 8 Conference game today.
Samantha James '18 scored EC's lone goal of the day for the Soaring Eagles.
The Purple and Gold's defense held strong for the first half until giving up a goal off a shot from a penalty corner that was deflected into the net 22:36 into the first half. 2:11 later the Presidents would sneak another goal behind the EC's netminder off another deflected shot.
Washington and Jefferson increased their lead to 3-0 after a shot from a penalty corner was re-directed into the net. James put Elmira on the board in the 42nd minute after taking advantage of a shot from
Atupele Machika '18 that caromed off the President's goal tender onto her stick and punched it home to trail Washington and Jefferson, 3-1. WJC scored another goal at the 62:59 mark to take a 4-1 advantage. Elmira did not go down without a fight as EC recorded four penalty corners and five shots in the last six minutes of play, but was unable to capitalize on the last minute effort.
The EC women will compete next on September 16th at Wells College, the game is set to begin at 4:30 p.m.
