Aurora, NY -- With 1:31 left in the first overtime period, Alli Gilbert '16 found a pass in front of the net and punched it home to lift the Elmira College field hockey team (1-5) over Wells College (0-8) 1-0 today. Julie Hockenberger '18 made eight saves to post her first career shutout today.
 
Both teams traded scoring opportunities in the first half of play but neither the Soaring Eagles nor the Express would find the back of the cage. Wells held the shot advantage in the first, 3-1. Hockenberger stopped two shots to preserve the scoreless half.
 
Wells called for a timeout with 16:41 left in regulation play and when play resumed the Purple and Gold put on the offensive pressure. The Soaring Eagles quickly got three shots off before Alison Mariano '18 almost put the EC women in the lead, but the shot caromed off the post. At the end of the second half the score still remained 0-0.
 
Elmira kept the offensive pressure strong going into the first overtime period as the Purple and Gold got eight shots off before Sarah McCaffrey '18 sent a long ball across the front of the net where Gilbert was waiting to pick the ball up and blast it behind the Wells' netminder to give EC to 1-0 victory.
 
The Soaring Eagles will compete next when they travel to Utica College on September 20th for a Empire 8 Conference matchup.
