Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College women's soccer team could not overcome a two-goal halftime deficit, falling to St. Lawrence University, 2-0 Saturday afternoon. EC was outshot 27-6, with 15 of the Saints' shots being on target.
Gabe Carmona '18 kept the game within reach for Elmira, making 13 saves in the loss.
Unlike the previous few games, EC was the team to have its chances early in the game as crisp passing and good decision-making helped the Purple and Gold march down the field and apply offensive pressure on several occasions. Elmira had a pair of shots, the first from
Danielle Fournier '15 nearly nine minutes into the game and the second from
Mikayla Gowett '17 just over a minute later, turned away by St. Lawrence keeper Kelsey West, keeping the game 0-0.
From the 10:26 mark on, EC was outshot 13-1 as most of the final 35 minutes was played in Elmira's defensive half. The Saints were able to get two scores on the board, one in the 26th minute and the other in the 40th minute to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
St. Lawrence maintained their offensive pressure in the second half, but EC responded as the women looked to get back in the game. The Soaring Eagles put together a few promising runs, but the Saints defense stood tall, only allowing for Elmira to put one shot on target in the second half. No shots found the back of the net in the final 45 minutes, leading to EC's 2-0 defeat.
The Soaring Eagles have a week to prepare for their Empire 8 Conference opener against Hartwick College, which is scheduled for Saturday, September 20th at 1:00 p.m. on EC's Campus Field.
