Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College men's soccer team will look for their 10th consecutive season-opening win this afternoon as the Soaring Eagles host the Monarchs of King's College at 4:00 p.m. at Elmira's Campus Field.
Season OpenerThe Soaring Eagles open the 2014 season against the Monarchs of King's College. Elmira has seen a great deal of success in season opening games over the last 12 seasons, posting a 10-2 record. In those 12 games, Elmira has outscored their opponents 34-10. Additionally, of Elmira's 10 wins, four came in the form of one goal victories.
Not in 11 YearsToday's matchup against King's marks the first time since the 2003 season the two teams have played each other. Elmira and King's played a home-and-home series in 2002 and 2003. The Monarchs won both games, each by a single goal, including the 2003 matchup which was decided in extra time.
All Eyes on BertschElmira lost nearly 95 percent of their scoring from a season ago.
Ryan Bertsch '16, the one returner with a goal to his name, should be the main target for Elmira's offense. Bertsch is the owner of 13 career points on five goals and three assists.
Last Time OutKing's College enters today's contest with a flawless 2-0 record after scoring a pair of wins at the Monarch-Royal Classic. The Monarchs picked up wins against Neumann University and Penn State Altoona.
Road OpenerToday's game against Elmira marks the first road contest of the season for the Monarchs. In the last 13 seasons, King's has gone 4-7-2 in road opening games and have been outscored 15-25 in those 13 games. However, the Monarchs have seen much more success as of late as they have gone 4-1-1 in their last six road opening games.
