Plattsburgh, NY -- The Elmira College women's soccer team appeared to be headed for their second consecutive overtime game, however, a late goal by Plattsburgh State gave the Cardinals the 1-0 win. Gabe Carmona '18 continued her early season success in net, stopping an astounding 15 shots in the loss. The 15 saves are the most recorded by any Elmira goalkeeper since the second game of the 2010 season when Karissa Wilson '12 made 16 saves against SUNY Geneseo on September 7, 2010.
 
The Purple and Gold, unfortunately, were unable to get a shot off in the first half but EC's back-line held strong despite missing three-year starter Kimi Girmus '16. That Soaring Eagle defense, with Carmona ensuring that no ball would pass her, was able to keep Plattsburgh's high-powered offense, which had scored 13 goals in its last two games, off the scoreboard for the first 45 minutes of play despite the Cardinals putting eight of their 13 first-half shots on frame.
 
The second half was much of the same defensive stalemate as Carmona continued to stymie Plattsburgh's chances. As the time ticked down under 10 minutes to play, EC's Mackenzie Donohue '15 did have a quality look at the net, but Donohue's shot was turned away by Plattsburgh's keeper to keep it level. Just minutes after that save, the Cardinals would score the go-ahead, and eventual game-winning, goal as Lindsey Bushey netted her fourth of the year, firing a left-footed shot up and out of the reach of Carmona. EC looked for an answer over the final five minutes of play to force extra time, but their efforts fell short as the final horn sounded with the score 1-0.
 
Elmira returns to action on Wednesday, September 10th when they travel to take on SUNY Potsdam in another non-conference game. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
