Elmira, NY -- Following a loss in their season opener to the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, the Elmira College women's volleyball team will look to get in the win column this weekend as the Soaring Eagles travel to nearby Rochester, NY to compete in the University of Rochester Tournament.
Last Time OutElmira came out on the wrong end of a 3-0 decision against the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford last Tuesday. The loss to Pitt-Bradford snapped a four-match win streak against the Panthers. Elmira's
Amanda Blinkinsop '16 led Elmira's offense with 10 kills, making her the only EC player with double-digit kills in Tuesday night's contest.
Things Are Looking UpAlthough Elmira fell in their season opener, history is on their side. Since 2001, Elmira has only lost three season opening matches, with the third being this year's defeat to Pitt-Bradford. However, following EC's two previous season opening losses, the Soaring Eagles have responded well, wining the second match of the season. In 2010 Elmira lost their season opener to Pitt-Bradford but responded in their next match with a 3-0 sweep of Hartwick. A similar instance occurred in 2002 when Elmira lost their first game of the season to Oswego State but bounced back with another 3-0 sweep of SUNY Potsdam.
Series HistoryElmira will play against four teams in this weekend's tournament. Below is the breakdown of how Elmira has fared against these teams since the 2001 season.
Penn State Behrend: 0-0 (first meeting since 2001 season)
Skidmore College: 2-1 (last meeting in 2010 – Elmira won 3-0)
The Sage Colleges: 3-0 (last meeting in 2012 – Elmira won 3-1)
University of Rochester: 0-4 (last meeting in 2007 – Rochester won 3-0)
Looking AheadFollowing this weekend's tournament at the University of Rochester, the Soaring Eagles will have a week off before competing in the Lycoming College Invitational. Tournament play at Lycoming starts on Friday, September 12th when Elmira opens tournament play against York College of Pennsylvania at 4:00 p.m.
