Rochester, NY -- Mikayla Gowett '17 scored her first goal of the season in the 89th minute to avoid the shutout, but the Elmira College women's soccer team lost, 3-1, against Nazareth College Saturday at the Golden Flyer Stadium.
The Golden Flyers raced out to an early first-half lead with two unanswered goals off of the foot of junior Michaela Soules. Her first tally came only 1:53 into the contest, and she followed by scoring the eventual game-winner less than two minutes later.
Nazareth concluded a dominate first-half performance with a goal from freshman Jessica Byrnes in the 41st minute, extending the lead to three. The Soaring Eagles were outshout, 11-to-2, in the first 45 minutes. EC's only shot on goal in the opening stanza came in the 38th minute;
Kerri Wertman '17 fired a shot on target but Nazareth goalkeeper Allison Dobles was there for the stop.
In the second half, however, the shots were even at six apiece and EC held an advantage in corner kicks, 2-to-1. Elmira keeper
Gabe Carmona '18 made two saves to blank the Golden Flyers in the second half.
Gowett prevented EC from being shutout for the seventh time in 2015 with her second career goal with only 1:20 left in regulation. The Purple and Gold advanced the ball into their offensive zone down the left wing, and then from the top of the 18-yard box,
Kate DeLellis '18 sent a diagonal cross in to Gowett, who found the back of the net.
