Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College women's soccer team will tangle with the red-hot Ithaca College Bombers in Empire 8 Conference action on Tuesday, October 20th at 3:00 p.m. at Campus Field.
Coming off of a double-overtime victory against Alfred State, the Soaring Eagles will look to end Ithaca's five-game win streak and seven-game unbeaten streak to keep any hopes of making the conference tournament alive.
Last Time OutIt took two overtime periods to produce a result in Elmira's last contest. However, the wait was worth it, as the Soaring Eagles scored a 1-0 double overtime victory on the road against Alfred State.
Jordyn Rousselle '18 came through as the hero on Saturday, as the Stillwater, NY native delivered the golden goal in the 103rd minute for her first game-winning goal of the season. EC netminder
Gabe Carmona '18 produced seven saves in the double-overtime shutout win.
Rousselle RisingWhile offense has been hard to find at times for the Soaring Eagles, Rousselle has become the go-to option on the front line. After being held without a point as a freshman, the second-year midfielder is responsible for half of EC's goals this season with four. Her first career goal was scored in the victory over E8 foe St. John Fisher College on September 23rd. She followed that with two scores against Utica College three days later. The tally vs. Alfred State was the first game-winner of her young career.
Second Shutout of the SeasonCarmona made seven stops without allowing a goal in 102:28, earning her second clean sheet of the season and the third of her career. She made a crucial stop in the first overtime period, denying Alfred State's Julia Yanarella in the 97th minute en route to her third win of the season.
Working OvertimeThe 1-0 victory over Alfred State was the first game of the 2015 season to reach overtime, as it took over one hour and 42 minutes for the Soaring Eagles to tally the game-winner. It was EC's first overtime victory since it topped Kings College, 1-0, on September 16, 2008, and it was the first double-overtime "W" since the Soaring Eagles topped RIT, 1-0, on October 8, 2005. Since then, the EC women had gone 0-4-11 in double-overtime games.
First Road VictoryThe win vs. Alfred State was the first for the Soaring Eagles away from Campus Field this season, and the first such win since the 2014 regular-season finale on November 1st. That day, the Purple and Gold scored a season-high four goals to beat Utica College, 4-0. In addition, the game-winning goal from Rousselle was only the second scored by EC in eight games on the road in 2015.
Scouting the BombersIthaca College enters today's conference tilt with a 9-3-1 overall record and a 4-0-1 mark in Empire 8 play. After opening the year by going 3-3-0, the Bombers have gone unbeaten in their last seven games, going 6-0-1 during that stretch. Holly Niemiec and Kelsey King have been the go-to performers on offense for Ithaca this season. Niemiec owns the team-lead in points with 15 on five goals and a team-high five assists. King is not far behind with 14 points on a team-leading six goals and two helpers. Defensively, Beth Coppolecchia looks like a mainstay at the goalkeeper position with 67 saves and the conference's third best goals against average at 0.76.
Up NextFollowing this afternoon's bout with the Bombers, the Soaring Eagles will hit the road for another conference game this Saturday, October 24th, as the Purple and Gold take on Hartwick College at 12:00 p.m. Elmira returns to Campus Field on Saturday, October 31st, for EC's regular season finale, and Class of 2016 Recognition Day, against Alfred University at 12:00 p.m.
