Elmira, NY -- Following a five-match homestand, the Elmira College women's volleyball team travels to the Flower City this Wednesday, October 21st, as the Soaring Eagles take on the University of Rochester in a non-conference contest. Wednesday's match is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Rochester's Louis Alexander Palestra.
Last Time OutThe Soaring Eagles welcomed seven teams from around the region to compete in the Elmira College Invitational last weekend. Elmira went 2-2 at the event, with wins against SUNY Cortland and the City College of New York.
Natalie Schieder '19 led the Soaring Eagles with team-highs in kills (56), digs (46), and service aces (9).
Top FroshAfter leading the Soaring Eagles in several statistical categories last week, rookie outside hitter Schieder was named the Empire 8 Conference Rookie of the Week, her first conference honor of the season. Schieder produced team-high kills in three of Elmira's five matches, including a career-high 20 kills in a four-set win over SUNY Cortland, Elmira's first win against the Red Dragons in five years. She also had three matches last week with a hitting percentage of .400 or better.
Empire 8 Tune-UpWednesday's match against the Yellowjackets will serve as a great opportunity for EC to prepare for its biggest weekend of the year, a one-day two-match event against E8 foes Houghton College and Stevens Institute of Technology. Elmira currently sits in fourth place in the conference standings and could solidify their spot in this year's Empire 8 Tournament with a pair of E8 wins.
Scouting RochesterThe Yellowjackets are 12-13 on the season and enter Wednesday's contest having lost three straight. Rochester is 3-7 in its last 10 matches, however, the Yellowjackets have been superb on their home court, going 6-0 this year in home matches. Rochester's offense features a three-headed attack in Jennie Ford, Emma Gira, and Shira Katz. Ford leads the trio with 253 kills and a team-leading 2.81 kills per set average. Gira has 194 kills on the season with a 2.20 kills per set average, while Katz is close behind with 160 kills and a 2.39 average. Defensively, Elmira will have to watch out for Gira and Alexandra Goldman at the net, as the two lead the Yellojackets with 52 and 48 blocks, respectively.
Looking AheadFollowing Wednesday's contest with Rochester, the Soaring Eagles return to its home court at Speidel Gymnasium on Saturday, October 24th, as the Elmira women play host to Houghton and Stevens for a pair of ultra-important Empire 8 matches. Elmira takes on the Highlanders of Houghton at 11:00 a.m. before concluding the day with a 4:00 p.m. showdown with conference-leader Stevens.
