Saturday's regular season finale is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at EC's Campus Field, where the Soaring Eagles will honor its graduating members of the Class of 2016.
Last Time OutElmira College suffered a 2-0 setback on the road in its most recent contest against King's College (PA). The Soaring Eagles played the Monarchs to a 0-0 halftime score, much of that having to do with the efforts of
Kevin Huggins '16, who saved a penalty kick in the 30th minute. Unfortunately, King's would break through with two second half goals to put the game out of reach.
It All Comes Down to ThisThe 2015 season comes to its realization on Saturday, as the Soaring Eagles play in their final contest of the regular season. With the Empire 8 Conference Tournament field still not set, tomorrow's contest holds plenty of weight for Elmira. In order for EC to get into this year's postseason tournament, the Soaring Eagles must earn at least a tie in order to have a chance. If Elmira ties and Houghton College falls to Utica College, EC is in. However, if Elmira wins and Alfred University or Houghton tie or lose, the Purple and Gold will be seeded third in the tournament. Unfortunately, all of Elmira's postseason hopes will come to screeching half if Alfred and Houghton both win on Saturday.
Regular Season Home FinaleSince 2002, Elmira has gone 5-7-1 in regular season home finales. Although EC's record is just a shade below .500, the Soaring Eagles are unbeaten in its last five home finales, which include five consecutive wins dating back to 2010.
Series HistoryElmira and St. John Fisher have played each other 31 times over the years, with their first meeting occurring in 1978. The Cardinals enjoy a slight edge in the all-time series with a 16-12-3 record. However, Fisher has seen the majority of success in recent years, as the Cardinals enter Saturday's regular season finale on a four-game unbeaten streak which includes three consecutive wins.
Scouting the CardinalsSt. John Fisher College enters tomorrow's regular season finale with a 3-12 overall record and a 2-4 mark in conference play. The Cardinals are playing their best soccer of the season as of late, as all three of its season wins have occurred in Fisher's last five games. However, one area that has not improved as the season has progressed has been Fisher's play in away games. The Cardinals are 0-9 when playing away from Growney Stadium and have been outscored 28-to-4 in those contests. Joel Castellini spearheads Fisher's offensive attack with a team-high nine points on a team-best four goals and one assist. Castellini has scored in three games for Fisher this year, two of which resulted in wins. Defensively, Joseph Catalfamo has seen the lion's share of minutes in goal with 66 saves and a 2.39 goals against average.
