Elmira, NY -- Only a few days have passed since the Elmira College women's volleyball team faced SUNY Delhi for the first time in program history, a match that ended with the Soaring Eagles claiming a five-set win. However, the Broncos of SUNY Delhi will have revenge on the mind tonight, as it travels to face the Purple and Gold for a second straight match. Tonight's non-conference tilt is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at EC's Speidel Gymnasium.
Last Time OutAt the Hartwick/Holiday Inn Tournament last Saturday, Elmira posted a 1-3 record against some stiff competition in Oneonta, NY. The Soaring Eagles opened tournament play with three consecutive losses against MCLA, United States Coast Guard Academy, and Union College, before closing out the weekend with a five-set win over the Broncos of SUNY Delhi.
Ashley Heiman '16 paced the Elmira offense with 37 kills and a 2.47 kills per set average, both of which were team-highs.
Five Set ThrillerThe Soaring Eagles earned a hard fought 3-2 win over SUNY Delhi on the final day of the Hartwick/Holiday Inn Tournament. Elmira fell behind 2-0 after dropping the first two sets against the Broncos. Thankfully, Elmira's hitting percentage vastly improved in the final three sets, as the Purple and Gold completed the comeback. Elmira's rally from two sets down is the first time EC has come back from an 0-2 hole since October 29, 2011, when EC bounced back for a five set win after dropping the first two against Ramapo College.
Season High PerformancesKelsey Ross '16 and
Taylor Kaznowski '19 produced a pair of season-highs over the weekend. In the win over SUNY Delhi, Ross made a season-high 20 digs, which marks the sixth time in her career she has gone for 20 or more. Against MCLA, Kaznowski logged a season-high 33 assists, marking the fifth time this season she has posted 30 or more in a single match.
Looking for .138 and AboveElmira is undefeated this season (9-0) when it collectively hits .138 from the floor. However, Elmira is still searching for a win when the team has not hit the .138 mark, going 0-7 in those contests. Over the last four years, Elmira is 54-20 when hitting .138 from the floor, including a 34-6 mark since the 2013 season.
Scouting the BroncosSUNY Delhi enter tonight's non-conference with an 11-8 record and a five-match losing streak. After opening the year with a 10-2 record, the Broncos have hit a rough patch lately, as SUNY Delhi has dropped six of its last seven matches. Kristen Maslanka '19 leads the Delhi offense with 139 kills, while Joy Clark '18 sets up the attack with 454 assists. Defensively, the Broncos have relied on the efforts of Morgan Salsman '19 on the ground, as her 270 digs leads the team, while Kaylee Meehan '19 has been a force at the net with a team-leading 27 blocks, including 24 solos.
Looking AheadElmira will be back in action this Thursday, October 8th, when the Soaring Eagles travel to take on the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford for a 6:00 p.m. non-conference showdown. The Soaring Eagles return to Speidel Gymnasium the following Thursday, October 15th, when EC hosts Cazenovia College at 6:00 p.m.
