Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College women's basketball (8-13, 4-8 E8) team fell 49-36 to Empire 8 Conference foe Stevens Institute of Technology (19-2, 12-1 E8) today.
Karli Pochkar '16 led the Soaring Eagles with 11 points and five rebounds, the only double-digit performance of the night for EC.
Alex Balara '15 was behind Pochkar with nine points and again filled the stat sheet with, seven rebounds, five steals, three blocks, and three assists. while
Meghan Loya '16 was the leading rebounder tonight, posting nine rebound alongside seven points and one block.
The Ducks scored the game's first seven points and would continue on with a 15-3 run. Balara ended the run with a layup and helped spark a 15-9 Elmira run that covered the remainder of the first half. Balara would also cap off the run with a three-pointer to trail the Ducks 24-18 going into the locker room. Loya led the EC women at the half in both points and rebounds with seven and five, respectively. Balara also had a strong first half recording six points, four boards, three steals, and a block.
With two foul shots made by Pochkar in the first minute of the second half, the EC women cut Stevens' lead to 24-20. However, the Ducks would take control of the game by going on a 20-5 run to lead Elmira, 44-25. Elmira battled the rest of the game, going on an 11-5 run to close the contest, however, it would not be enough as the Purple and Gold fell, 49-36. Pochkar scored all of her 11 points and grabbed four of her five rebounds in the second half.
The Purple and Gold will compete next tomorrow, February 14th when the EC women host Empire 8 Conference foe Hartwick College at 2:00 p.m.
