Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College women's basketball team is getting ready to host their final two games of the regular season. The Purple and Gold will take on Empire 8 Conference opponents Ithaca College tonight at 6:00 p.m. before facing Alfred University tomorrow, February 21st at 2:00 p.m.
Last Time OutThe Purple and Gold are coming off a thrilling 52-49 overtime win against Empire 8 Conference opponent Houghton College. With 3:22 left in the overtime period, Houghton scored a layup to go up 49-47.
Alex Balara '15 then scored five straight points off two lay-ups and a foul shot to put the Soaring Eagles ahead by three points with four seconds remaining. Balara's heroics did not end there, as Houghton's last second three-pointer to send the game into double-overtime, was blocked by Balara, sealing EC's three-point win.
Balara's Monster GameNot only did
Alex Balara '15 make crucial plays during the game, she also led the EC women with her second career double-double. She posted a career-high 29 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Her 11 boards was one shy tying a career-high of 12 set on February 16th, 2013 against Utica College.
Come From Behind VictoryElmira trailed Houghton by as many as 11 points in the first half. EC's 11-point come-from-behind victory is their largest comeback win since February 5th, 2013 when Elmira erased an 18-point deficit against Alfred University. Elmira's victory was also significant since it came in overtime. The largest deficit erased in an overtime win prior to Tuesday was 16 points in an 85-74 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology on February 7, 2004.
Cleary vs. ClearyFor the second time this season,
Danielle Cleary '18 will face her older sister, Harley Cleary '15 of Alfred University. In the last matchup, Danielle totaled 17 points, four rebounds, and one assist while Harley posted nine points, two assists, and one steal. The sisters are two of the best scorers in the Empire 8 Conference, ranking eighth and ninth in the conference. Danielle edges her older sister with 13.4 points per contest while Harley is right behind her with 13.2 points per game.
