Elmira, NY -- The No. 15 Elmira College men's volleyball team will host the Mark Twain Cup this Friday, February 27th and Saturday, February 28th. Elmira will kick-off the tournament against Stevenson University at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
Last Time OutThe Purple and Gold are coming off a thrilling 3-2 comeback win over No. 6 Nazareth College. After falling behind 2-0 against the Golden Flyers, the EC men turned things around and won the next three sets to pull off the upset. This is the second time in a row that Elmira has taken down their rivals after losing seven straight to the Golden Flyers and also their first win of the season against a nationally ranked opponent.
Faccio Breaking RecordsEarly on in the second set against Nazareth,
Carlos Faccio '16 posted back-to-back aces, bringing his season total to 53. That total tied an EC single-season record set by
Ryan Gelenitis '14. But later in the match, in the fourth set, that record would fall as Faccio got his third ace of the match and brought his season total to 54.
Top Setter-Hitter Duo In the CountryCarlos Faccio '16 and
Erik Griffin '16 have developed some chemistry on the court this season as Faccio leads the United Volleyball Conference (UVC) in assists per set with 10.00 while Griffin leads the conference in kills per set with 4.29. What's even more impressive is that the two both rank in the top-three in the nation in their respective categories, Faccio is third while Griffin is second. Elmira is the only team in the country to have a player rank in the top-five in both categories.
All-Time SeriesElmira will take on both Stevenson University and SUNY IT on Friday before competing against Penn St.-Behrend, in a UVC matchup, and Wells College on Saturday. The Purple and Gold are still searching for their first win in program history against Stevenson while the EC men have seen a great amount of success against the remaining three opponents, posting a combined 8-1 record.
