Women's Basketball Downed by St. John Fisher

Pittsford, NY -- The Elmira College women's basketball team dropped to 4-6 in Empire 8 play, and three games back of Nazareth College for the fourth-and-final conference playoff spot, after falling to St. John Fisher College, 79-38, Friday night. EC struggled to get much going offensively, with the trio of Danielle Cleary '18, Allie Olsen '16, and Ashley Heiman '16 producing a team-high six points.

Behind EC's top scorers were another trio of players who each contributed five points in starters, Kelsey Geisler '15, Meghan Loya '16, and Karli Pochkar '16. Loya added seven rebounds to her five points, while both Geisler and Pochkar pulled in four.

Both offenses started slow as St. John Fisher led by a 7-0 margin just under seven minutes into the game. Elmira, however, would tie the game in a hurry, scoring seven consecutive points over the next two minutes to make it 7-7. EC's momentum, unfortunately, would halt there as the Cardinals answered with what would amount to a 25-9 run over the remaining 11 minutes of the first half to lead 32-16 at halftime.

St. John Fisher used another 7-0 run to start the second half, increasing Elmira's deficit to 23 points. The Soaring Eagles were able to trade baskets with the Cardinals for the next few minutes, but St. John Fisher would again go on a large run, 32-7 over a nine-minute span, to down the Purple and Gold, 79-38.

EC returns to action against Nazareth College tomorrow, February 7th at 2:00 p.m. in Speidel Gymnasium. Tomorrow's game will also be senior day as the Purple and Gold recognize their two Class of 2015 members, Alex Balara '15 and Geisler.
