Elmira, NY -- The No. 11 Elmira College men's volleyball team will travel to No. 5 Springfield College this Saturday at 3:00 p.m. before heading to play their final UVC Tri-Match in New Paltz, NY on Sunday. Elmira will close their UVC schedule at the Tri-Match against host No. 3 SUNY New Paltz and Bard College.
Last Time OutThe Purple and Gold are coming off a close 3-1 loss against No. 7 Nazareth College. Elmira had leads in each of the four sets but after evening the match at 1-1, Nazareth pulled out the third and fourth sets by 28-26 and 27-25 scores, respectively, to win the match.
Erik Griffin '16 and
Mike Ellison '16 led the Soaring Eagles on offense with 24 and 16 kills, respectively.
Dylan Kuhn '16 also tallied double-digit kills, with 11, while
Rob Shade '15 led on defense with 15 digs.
UVC This SeasonThe Purple and Gold have competed in two UVC Tri-Matches this season and have a 3-3 record in those matches. Elmira sits fifth in the UVC and the results of EC's final UVC Tri-Match this weekend will determine the Soaring Eagles' are positioned in the UVC Tournament.
One of the Best in the NationErik Griffin '16 not only leads the UVC in points and kills per set with 5.05 and 4.51, respectively, but the third-year standout also leads the nation in points per set and is ranked second in kills per set. Griffin is just 0.03 kills per set away from top-ranked Jackson Wiley of Emerson College.
All-Time SeriesElmira has five combined losses to Springfield College and SUNY Paltz with all three coming when those team were nationally ranked. In addition, three of those five losses have come when their opposition has ranked either first or second in the nation. The Purple and Gold have been nearly flawless in five matches against Bard College, giving up just one set in five meeting.
