Late Goal Derails Comeback Effort by Men’s Soccer

Records: Susquehanna (1-1), Elmira (0-2)
Location: Campus Field – Elmira, NY

Elmira, NY --
Two goals in the final 10 minutes greatly altered the outcome of today's game, as the Elmira College men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 defeat against visiting Susquehanna University.  Elmira trailed late in the second half but managed to tie things up in the 81st minute, however, a goal by Susquehanna in the 82nd minute all but sealed EC's second loss of the year.

Both teams played to a 0-0 tie at halftime, but the Crusaders of Susquehanna broke the deadlock with a goal in the 61st minute.  Scoring the game's opening goal was Nick Fecci, who buried a header off of a corner kick into the far post side netting.

Nearly 20 minutes would pass until the next goal was scored when, on an Elmira free kick from 40 yards out, EC's Michael Bryant '17 drew a foul on Susquehanna inside the box.  As a result of the foul, the Soaring Eagles were awarded a penalty shot, one that was taken and converted by Bryant in the 81st minute.

With the game knotted at 1-1, Elmira looked to build on Bryant's late goal but the Crusaders responded a little over a minute later thanks to a Ryan Cronin goal in the 82nd minute.  Cronin's goal was setup by a great individual effort by Thomas Burke, who carried the ball down the end line before sending a low cross to Cronin, who one-timed the pass into the back of the net for the score.

Turning Point
It looked as though today's turning point was going to be Bryant's goal off the penalty kick but the outcome of today's game changed drastically thanks to Susquehanna's Thomas Burke.  Burke beat several defenders in Elmira's defensive zone and continued to dribble down the EC end line before sending a precise cross into the box to teammate Ryan Cronin, who knocked-in the game-winning goal with 8:17 to play in regulation.
