Men's Soccer to Challenge SUNY Canton in Non-Conference Action

ELMIRA, NY -- Elmira College men's soccer will leave the friendly confines of Campus Field for the first time in 10 days, when the Soaring Eagles travel to face SUNY Canton in non-conference action on Tuesday, October 10th. The match is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.

Last Time Out: The Soaring Eagles lost a heartbreaker to Route 13 rival, Ithaca College, 4-2. The Bombers came out of the gate very quickly, netting two goals in the first nine minutes of the game. Ithaca would add one more before the end of the half for good measure. However, the Purple and Gold did not lose their fighting spirit. Donte Donegal '18 would get the Soaring Eagles on the board in the 57th minute, when he would capitalize off of a beautiful pass from Kevin Kanakan '17 to split two defenders and bury the ball into the net. Tony Barraco '18 put a well-played one-timer past the goalie to pull the Soaring Eagles within one goal in the 72nd minute. Unfortunately it would not be enough, as the Bombers would add one more goal in the 81st minute to ice the game.

First Time Scorers: Barraco's goal and Kanakan's assist were the first in their respective categories. It was a noteworthy week for Kanakan. The Portland, Maine, native registered his first goal and assist in the three-day stretch. The fourth-year Soaring Eagle scored an unassisted goal in the Purple and Gold's 3-2 comeback victory over Skidmore on Wednesday, October 5th. EC will look to these new sources of offense to continue its recent success for its stretch run of the season.

Comeback Kids: In both games last week, the Soaring Eagles had to make furious comebacks to fight their way back into contention. In the first game against Skidmore, Elmira found itself down 2-0 in the first 48 minutes of the match. The Purple and Gold made a frantic comeback, scoring three goals in the final 42 minutes to win the contest 3-2. Against Ithaca, the Soaring Eagles again started off slow allowing the Bombers to score three goals in the first-half. The Soaring Eagles second comeback attempt fell just short, when Ithaca got a late goal to seal the loss.

Scouting the Kangaroos: SUNY Canton has struggled to start the season, as the Kangaroos have an overall record of 3-9-1. Canton has gained some momentum as of late, winning three out of their last four bouts, all of which were at home, bringing Canton's home record to 3-3-1. The Kangaroos are currently on a season-long seven match home-stand. The Kangaroos last played on October 9th, when they easily beat Berkley College (NY), 8-0. Canton spread the goals around with seven different Kangaroos scoring at least once against Berkley. Edward Malinoski, Jr. and Mouhamadou Cisse lead the Kangaroos offense, who currently sit tied for the team lead in points with 13. Malinoski, Jr. has six goals and one assist, while Cisse has five goals and three assists.

All-Time Series: The Soaring Eagles have dominated the all-time series against the Kangaroos. The current record between the programs is 5-1-0 in favor of EC. Last season, the Purple and Gold made a big comeback, scoring three second-half goals to win 3-2. Michael Bryant '18 scored goals in the 75th and 80th minutes to lead Elmira to victory. The only win that Canton owns in the series came in October of 2014, when the Kangaroos won, 4-1, on their home pitch.

Up Next: The Purple and Gold will travel to Growney Stadium to face Empire 8 Conference rival, St. John Fisher, on Saturday, October 15th. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
