ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's soccer team will welcome Alfred State to the Murray Athletic Center for a non-conference contest on Tuesday, October 25th. The match is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: The Purple and Gold fell to No. 5 Stevens Institute of Technology, 9-0. The Ducks came out of the gate firing, scoring three goals in the first seven minutes of the contest. The constant pressure persisted throughout the contest, with Stevens finishing the match with 40 shots, 18 of which were on goal. Despite facing all of the Ducks' offensive aggression, the Soaring Eagles had the first opportunity to get on the board. Fourth-year midfielder
Maddie Miller '17 had two promising chances in the third and fourth minutes, but neither found the back of the net. Elmira goalie
Amanda Banner '17 had a busy day between the pipes, saving nine of the Ducks' 18 shots on goal.
FINISHING THE SEASON STRONG: The Soaring Eagles will look to finish the season strong during their last two matches. In recent history, Elmira has done well in their final home game of the season. In each of the last four seasons, the Purple and Gold won their home finale. In last season's finale, the Soaring Eagles defeated Alfred University, 5-1, and received a career-high six points from
Niki Lemper '17.
BANNER CLOSE TO HISTORY: After Sunday's match, fourth-year goalkeeper
Amanda Banner upped her season save total to 122. She currently sits in eight place among the program's all-time leaders with 291 saves in her career. The Mullica Township, New Jersey, native needs just nine more stops in her last two collegiate games to become just the eighth Soaring Eagle to reach the 300 career save plateau, and 19 more saves to tie Holly Newman '01 for seventh place on the all-time record list.
SCOUNTING THE PIONEERS: Alfred State enters today's matchup amidst an up-and-down soccer season. The Pioneers' overall record sits at 7-7 after a 12-0 victory over Villa Maria College on Saturday. Before Saturday's big win, however, the Pioneers lost two straight contests. Alfred State's road record reflects their inconsistency; away from Pioneer Stadium, its record is a mere 3-4. Freshmen seem to dominate the Pioneer's lineup, with 13 of the 25 players on the roster being first-year competitors. Fittingly, freshman striker Brooke Geibel paces the Pioneer offense with 27 points on 10 goals and seven assists. In goal, junior Allison Danielak leads the team with 57 saves and a 1.30 goals-against average.
SERIES HISTORY: Today's contest will mark the third all-time meeting between the two programs. The Purple and Gold have controlled the short series, having won both of the matchups. Last season, Elmira won a heated contest in double-overtime, 1-0.
Jordyn Rousselle '18 scored the decisive goal in the 103rd minute after splitting a defender and beating the Pioneers' goalie one on one. The inaugural matchup between EC and Alfred State took place in October of 2014; Elmira downed the Pioneers, 3-0, thanks to a seven-save shutout from Banner.
UP NEXT: EC will play its season finale and host Class of 2017 Recognition Day against Empire 8 Conference foe, Hartwick College, on Saturday, October 29th, on Campus Field. The match is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
