ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Elmira College men's soccer concludes it season when it travels to Yunevich Stadium to face Alfred University in Empire 8 Conference action on Saturday, October 29th. The match is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: The Purple and Gold honored their seven graduating seniors in a pregame ceremony before their 1-1 double-overtime draw to King's College (Pa.). From the opening whistle the action was tense between the two programs. King's scored the first goal on a very controversial play in the first 11 minutes of action. On the play, Monarch foward Chris Galeano received a pass outside of the box and dribbled and fired a shot past the EC goalie
Jordan Hodlofski '17. The play was controversial because the entire Purple and Gold bench thought that Galeano was offside when the pass was attempted.
Michael Bryant '18 tied the game at 1-all with a PK in the 43rd minute after a Monarch hand ball penalty in their own box. The Soaring Eagles had a few chances to take the lead, the best of which was a
Tony Barraco '18 attempt in the 66th minute, but Monarch goalkeeper Owen Geedey was able to dive and get a hand on it and push the ball just wide.
BRYANT DOMINATES E8: With Bryant's goal in Wednesday's match, the Portola Hills, California, native took possession of first place in the league with his eighth goal of the season. The junior forward also pulled himself into a tie for second place in the conference in points with 18. Bryant now has 31 career goals at Elmira, good for sixth place on EC's all-time goal scoring list.
SCOUTING THE SAXONS: Alfred enters Saturday's contest struggling of late, going winless in its last five matches. The Saxons overall record sits at 7-7-2 after their most recent loss to Stevens Institute of Technology, 2-1. Alfred is a very different team at home then on the road, with a home record of 4-1-2 and a record of 2-6-0 away from Yunevich Stadium. The Empire 8 has not been friendly to the Saxons either, with their lone conference victory coming against Utica College. Empire 8 All-Conference First-Teamer Richard Lander paces the Saxons' offense with a team-best 10 points on five goals. Junior goalkeeper Chris Gutierrez leads the Alfred defense with 63 saves, third-most in the E8, and a 1.40 goals-against average, fourth-best in the conference. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
SERIES HISTORY: The series between these two programs have been tightly contested throughout, with the record tied at 15-15-3. Last season's contest between the two programs ended in a 3-3 double-overtime draw at Campus Field, with Bryant pacing the Elmira offense with two goals. The Soaring Eagles have dominated the series in recent years, winning seven straight matches between 2007-13, with the Soaring Eagles most recent victory being a 2-1 victory in September of 2013, Bryant led the team in the contest with a game-high tying four shots.
