ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's tennis concludes its fall home schedule with a pair of Empire 8 Conference contests this weekend at the Murray Athletic Center. On Saturday, October 8th, the Soaring Eagles host the Ducks of Stevens Institute of Technology at 1:00 p.m. In the regular-season home finale on Sunday, October 9th, EC squares off against Hartwick College, also at 1:00 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: It was another tough outing for the Elmira women, as the Soaring Eagles dropped their most recent contest to Nazareth College by a 7-2 final score.
Tilila El Yazidi '20 was a double-winner for the Purple and Gold. The rookie talent teamed up with
Megan Fitzgerald '18 for a hard-fought 8-6 win at first doubles, before pulling out a tight three-setter at first singles, 3-6, 6-4, 10-2.
EL YAZIDI MOVES UP IN RECORD BOOK: With two wins against the Golden Flyers,
Tilila El Yazidi continued her climb up the EC leaderboard for single-season wins. The native of Morocco boasts a 20-4 overall record this season with identical 10-2 marks in singles and doubles action. Her 20 wins are tied for fifth-most in program history with former EC great, Olivia Garcia '05, while her 10 singles victories are tied for second most. El Yazidi needs two wins to become the program's all-time single-season combined wins leader, while two singles wins would also give her the single-season crown in that specific category.
FITZGERALD EYES STRONG FINISH: Megan Fitzgerald has had a stellar junior year with the Soaring Eagles in 2016. The Thomaston, Connecticut, native owns an overall record of 19-5, including a 10-2 mark in doubles action. For her career, Fitzgerald has 27 doubles wins and 26 singles victories. With one additional singles and doubles win, Fitzgerald would move into a pair of two-way ties in EC history for fourth place in both categories.
SCOUTING STEVENS: The Ducks have pieced together another successful season in 2016 with a 7-1 overall record and a 6-1 mark in conference matches. Stevens opened the year with a routine win over Nazareth College, before dropping its next match to E8 power, Ithaca College. Since that loss, the Ducks have rattled off six consecutive victories and have surrendered no more than two matches during that time. Stevens has been solid up and down its lineup, but the real strength this year has been the play at the fifth and sixth singles positions, where the Ducks have posted a combined 15-1 record. Leading the way for Stevens has been Jillian Morneau, who is a perfect 7-0 in singles action while playing at spots four through six.
SCOUTING HARTWICK: After opening the year with an impressive seven-match win streak, the Hawks have hit a bit of a rough patch with three consecutive defeats. Two of the three losses came against the top two teams in the E8, Ithaca and Stevens, while the other occurred against a 10-3 Oneonta State team. Heidi Rice and Kelly Napolitano have been steady performers for Hartwick and have combined for 14 wins in singles. Rice has picked up her wins at first singles, including a 4-2 mark in conference matches, while Napolitano's wins were all decided at the third spot.
UP NEXT: This weekend's matches mark the final home contests of the 2016 fall season for the Elmira women. The Soaring Eagles conclude regular-season play on Thursday, October 13th, with a 4:00 p.m. non-league matchup against Lycoming College.
