ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's ice hockey team will cap-off a six-game stretch of ECAC West Conference games with contests against two of the top teams in the league this weekend. The Soaring Eagles host unbeaten and nationally-ranked Utica College on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center, before visiting Nazareth College in Rochester, New York, on Saturday night.
WEEKEND OVERVIEW
- Elmira suffered a pair of ECAC West road setbacks in the previous weekend, as the Soaring Eagles look to bounce back against two of the top teams in the league.Â
- Friday's tilt with the No. 7/8 nationally-ranked Pioneers is Elmira's first against a ranked team this season.
- The matchup between Elmira and Utica will also be a rematch of last season's ECAC West Quarterfinal game.Â
- Elmira will make its first trip back to the Bill Gray's Iceplex since last year's 5-2 early-season win over the Golden Flyers.Â
- EC enters the weekend tied for sixth place in the ECAC West standings.Â
MAGLIOCCO MAKING HIS MARK
- Elmira's senior netminder, Sal Magliocco, ranks fourth among NCAA Division III goalies in saves with 192 through EC's first six games.
- Magliocco, who entered the season in 11th place in the Elmira record books, has surpassed Steve Capps '85 (1,508) and Bill Burtch '87 (1,392) to take sole possession of ninth place with 1,531 career saves.
- Magliocco is the only goaltender among EC's all-time top-10 career saves leaders who does not also rank among the top-10 leaders in minutes played.
NO. 7/8 UTICA AT A GLANCE
- After advancing to the ECAC West Tournament Final a year ago, the Pioneers are off to their best start in program history at 6-0-0 (4-0-0 ECAC West).
- The six-game win streak is tied for the longest in Utica's program history, and is the longest since the Pioneers won six straight in 2012-13. The unbeaten streak is also the longest in the country to start the 2016-17 season.
- Five of Utica's six victories have come at the Utica Aud. UC's only road game so far this season was the opener, played at Fredonia on October 28th.
- Junior Roman Ammirato, who transferred to Utica after spending his first two seasons at Division I Union College, leads NCAA Division III in points (14) and is third in points per game (2.33).
- UC has the fourth-best power-play unit in the country, having scored on 30.3-percent of it's man-up opportunities (10-for-33).
NAZARETH AT A GLANCE
- Nazareth enter's the weekend in a tie for second in the conference standings with a 3-1-0 mark.
- Like Utica, Naz has enjoyed a lengthy homestand to begin 2016-17. The Golden Flyers played their first six games in Rochester, New York, and Saturday's contest with Elmira will mark the seventh home game out of the first eight of the season.
- Naz will play its first road game of the season at No. 6 Hobart on Friday before, hosting Elmira on Saturday.
- The Golden Flyers netted a program-record 10 goals in a 10-2 rout of Lebanon Valley on November 13th. Nine different skaters scored in the lopsided victory and 13 earned at least one point.
- Senior Dominik Gabaj, who led Naz in scoring as a junior, paces the Golden Flyers with 11 points. Gabaj enters the weekend tied with Utica's Ammirato for the ECAC West lead in goals scored with six.
