Rochester, NY -- Ninth-ranked Elmira College men's volleyball split its two matches on the opening day of the Purple & Gold Invitational, hosted by Nazareth College. The Soaring Eagles opened action at Kidera Gymnasium with a five-set win over Johnson & Wales University, before falling in four sets to Medaille College.
Elmira led 2-set-to-1 in the opening match, but a stingy Johnson & Wales squad would not go away without a fight, as the Wildcats forced a fifth set to decide today's match. EC used a 4-0 run in the early stages of the fifth to take control of the set. During EC's 4-0 run, the Wildcats produced two hitting errors, while Elmira's
Dylan Kuhn '16 and
Mike Ellison '16 each put away one kill apiece.
However, Johnson & Wales evened the set at 11-all, as the Wildcats steadily chipped away at the EC lead. The pressure of the match eventually got to the Wildcats, as three Johnson & Wales hitting errors, along with a service error, handed EC the set and the match.
Against the Mavericks, Elmira struggled to piece together consecutive points, resulting in Medaille taking a 2-sets-to-1 lead. Medaille pulled away from the Soaring Eagles midway through the set, going up by as many as four points at 19-15. However, EC rallied and won six of the next eight points to tie things up at 21-21. Unfortunately, that was as close as it would get, as Medaille held on for a 25-23 set score and a four-set victory.
