ELMIRA, N.Y. --- The visiting Herons of William Smith College defeated the Elmira College women's soccer team by a final score of 8-1 in the 2016 season opener at Campus Field on Thursday afternoon.

William Smith, which entered the year ranked No. 4 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Preseason Rankings, needed only 1:30 to open the scoring, as Evie Manning sent one past a diving Amanda Banner '17 to take a 1-0 lead.

Although the Herons continued to control possession, the Soaring Eagles would hold them scoreless for the next 25 minutes. Banner made four more stops in that span to keep the Purple and Gold in the game. However, the Herons found the back of the net twice more in the opening half, the latter off of a corner entry by MacKenzie Smith, which was finished by Kara Shue just inside the right post.

Down by seven late in the second half, the Soaring Eagles tallied their first goal of the new season off of the right foot of Sara Kazerouni '18. A failed clear from WSC goalie Alessandra Bryan was sent right to Kazerouni, and the third-year forward lofted a shot from just outside the 18-yard box over the head of the retreating netminder to avoid the shutout.

Turning Point
After one half of play, the Soaring Eagles only trailed the nationally-ranked Herons by three goals. Not only did William Smith strike first again in the second half, but a 3-0 rally in a span of 3:01 late in the period pushed the advantage to an insurmountable 7-0.
