ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Elmira College women's volleyball will travel to Canton, New York, to face SUNY Canton and St. Lawrence University in the Canton Classic on Saturday, October 1st, the first match scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m.
LAST TIME OUT: The Soaring Eagles defeated SUNY Delhi in three straight sets on September 28th. The Purple and Gold were led by a strong serving performance. EC finished with a season-high 15 aces in the match. Wednesday's match was just the third time this season that the Soaring Eagles finished with double-digits aces.
Natalie Schieder '19 led the charge for Elmira, serving six aces, the second-most in her career.
Kelsey Ray '17 paced the Soaring Eagles in kills with seven.
SCOUTING THE KANGAROOS: Canton enters the contest with a current overall record of 8-8 and a home record of 1-2. The Kangaroos' most recent match was a 3-0 win over Wilson College in the York College Tournament. Canton cruised to an easy victory over the Phoenix, only giving up 25 games in the entire match. In the York Tournament, Canton went 3-1, only losing a five-set match to FDU-Florham. Saturday's tilt will be the first home match for the Kangaroos since September 3rd. Kelsey Cornish leads the Kangaroos' offense with 156 kills on the season, only 10 kills ahead of Haley Riley, who is second on the team with 146. Jenna Roat leads Canton's defense with 313 digs on the season. In the win over Wilson, Cornish and Roat lived up to their stature leading the team in their respective categories.
SERIES HISTORY VS CANTON: Elmira's lost last season's contest against the Kangaroos, 3-2, at home, the only meeting between the two programs. EC won the first two sets, before losing the next three in close fashion. The Soaring Eagles were led by Schieder, who posted 12 kills and 14 digs in the match.
SCOUTING THE SAINTS: St. Lawrence enters the match with a record of 5-1 and a record of 1-3 at neutral sites. The Saints' most recent contest was a 3-2 loss to SUNY Potsdam. St. Lawrence won the first two sets in hard fought effort, but ended up losing the next three sets to earn the loss. The Saints have lost their last three matches, two of which were in straight sets. St. Lawrence's strength this season has been on the defensive side of the court. Amanda Teppo leads the Liberty League in blocks with 49. Ally Good leads the team and is fifth in the Liberty with 197 digs on the season. The loan common opponent for EC and St. Lawrence was Ithaca College.
SERIES HISTORY ST. LAWRENCE: EC leads the all-time record against the Saints 7-6. The two programs have not faced each other since 2009 when the Saints won 3-0. Elmira's last victory in the series came in September of 2006, with the Purple and Gold taking the match in straight sets.
UP NEXT: The Soaring Eagles will square off against Stevens Institute of Technology and Houghton College in an Empire 8 Conference tri-match on Saturday, October 8th. The first match against Stevens is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. in the Nielsen Physical Education Center, in Houghton, New York.
