ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's ice hockey team will look to remain unbeaten in the New Year, as the Soaring Eagles welcome Curry College and Salve Regina University to the Murray Athletic Center for a pair of non-league contests this weekend. Elmira battles the Colonels of Curry on Friday, January 13th, before squaring off with the No. 13/14 Seahawks of Salve Regina the following night. Both contests are scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
WEEKEND OVERVIEW
- After opening the New Year with a 6-3 win over SUNY Cortland and a 2-2 overtime tie against No. 6/7 SUNY Geneseo, the Soaring Eagles return to the Murray Athletic Center for a pair of non-league games against Curry and Salve Regina.
- Elmira is 4-1-1 in its last six games, all of which have been against non-conference opposition. All four EC victories have been scored on its home ice at the MAC.
- Friday's meeting with Curry is the first time the two have met at the MAC since the 2010 NCAA Division III Tournament, when EC topped the Colonels by a 4-1 final score in the opening round.
- EC's clash with Salve is the second all-time meeting at the MAC.
WEEKLY AWARDS FOR ELMIRA
- Elmira's defense was recognized for its effort in a 1-0-1 showing last weekend, as Sal Magliocco '17 and Harry Kramer '20 received weekly honors.
- Magliocco was named the ECAC West Goalie of the Week, after making a combined 75 saves over the weekend. He turned away a season-high 44 shots against Geneseo - the 44 saves were also the second-highest single-game total of his EC career.
- Kramer extended his consecutive point streak to four games with one goal and two assists over the weekend. For his efforts, Kramer was named the ECAC West Rookie of the Week and was selected to the D3hockey.com National Team of the Week.
CURRY AT A GLANCE
- Curry heads into Friday's bout against the Soaring Eagles with a 7-5-1 overall record and a 5-2-1 mark in the CCC.
- Curry has been tough to beat on its home ice with a 4-1-1 record at the Max Ulin Rink. However, the Colonels have not seen as much success on the road, sporting a 3-4-0 record in away and neutral site contests.
- The Colonels have faced two teams from the ECAC West this season. Curry downed Manhattanville on the road, 7-4, and suffered a 4-1 setback on neutral ice to Utica.
- The Colonels have been good on the power play this season, connecting at a 24.7-percent clip, the nation's 14th-highest scoring power play. Curry also boasts the country's 15th-best scoring offense with 3.91 goals per game.
- Tyler Vankleef leads Curry with 20 points on a team-leading 11 goals and nine assists. He also ranks 16th in the country with a points per game average of 1.54.
SALVE REGINA AT A GLANCE
- The Seahawks head into the weekend with a 9-2-2 overall record, a 6-1-1 CCC record, and a No. 13/14 national ranking.
- Salve Regina has sponsored men's ice hockey as a varsity collegiate sport since the 1997-98 season. The Seahawks pieced together their first winning season in 2014-15 (12-10-3), after suffering losing seasons in 16 of their first 17 seasons.
- Freshman Jack Billings has led the Seahawk offense through the team's first 13 games of the season. He has 20 points on five goals and a team-leading 15 assists. Billings is tied for second in the country in freshmen scoring (1.67 ppg).
- Nick Owen is playing in his final collegiate season with Salve, after spending the first two years of his career at Elmira (2013-15).
