Women's Basketball Challenges Geneseo and Stevens in Upcoming Contests

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- 
The Elmira College women's basketball team faces SUNY Geneseo and Empire 8 Conference rival Stevens Institute of Technology in their next two contests. The Soaring Eagles battle the Knights on Thursday, January 5th at 7:00 p.m. Two days later, EC will travel to Hoboken, New Jersey to challenge the Ducks on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. 

Vespucci Just Misses Double-Double
  • Rachel Vespucci finished the game against Hartwick College with 11 points and eight rebounds. 
  • Vespucci fell two rebounds short of recording a double-double in her fifth-straight contest. 
  • Her four-game double-double streak is the longest streak by any Soaring Eagle in the past 15 years. 
  • Vespucci still ranks third in the Empire 8 Conference with her 9.8 rebounds per game. 
  • She has taken the lead in the conference in offensive rebounds per game and as of January 3rd, she ranks 21st in the nation (4.8). 

Cleary Continues to Lead
  • Danielle Cleary continued her strong play against the Hawks, as she posted 10 points and nine boards. 
  • Cleary was one rebound away from recording her first double-double since a November 22nd matchup with Shenandoah University. 
  • She continues to pace the Purple and Gold in points per game (16.6), blocks (14) and steals (25). 
  • Cleary has climbed to number three on the E8 points per game leaderboard and sits second in both blocks and steals. 

Geneseo at a Glance
  • The Knights enter Thursday's meeting with an unblemished 9-0 record.
  • Geneseo's most recent contest was a 59-40 win over Medaille College on January 2nd.

  • Stevens has started to play better recently, winning two out of their last three games. 
  • The Ducks' most recent game was a 71-53 win over Utica College in their Empire 8 opener. 
  • Stevens has had to deal with a very tough non-conference schedule to start the season, as they have faced the likes of No. 14 Montclair State (12-0), New York University (9-1) and DeSales University (8-2). 
  • Five-foot-eleven-inch guard Kaitlyn Astel paces the Ducks' offense with 15.9 points per game.
  • Junior forward Megan Brown leads the E8 in rebounds per game and is the only player in the conference averaging a double-double (11.1 rebounds and 10.3 points).
