ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's volleyball team will conclude the 2017 campaign at the Dig Pink Invitational, hosted by SUNY Oneonta, on Friday and Saturday, October 27 and 28, in Oneonta, New York. On Friday, the Soaring Eagles will challenge the host Red Dragons at 4:00 p.m. and Baruch College at 6:00 p.m., before playing a 10:30 a.m. match against Bard College and a 12:00 p.m. bout against Hartwick College on Saturday.
LAST TIME OUT
EC dropped a tightly-contested non-conference bout to Keystone College by a 3-2 final score on Tuesday evening in La Plume, Pennsylvania. Despite taking the loss in the bout, Elmira outhit the Giants by a .210-to-.155 margin and held slim advantages in assists (53-to-48) and service aces (11-to-8). The Purple and Gold's inefficiency at the service line helped Keystone stay in the match, as the Soaring Eagles recorded 15 service errors, while the Giants finished with just nine. EC's 15 service errors are tied for the most that it has posted in a match this year. Leading the way for Elmira was junior outside hitter
Natalie Schieder '19, who tallied match highs in both in digs (23) and kills (20). Schieder's 20-kill-20-dig performance is her second of the season. Schieder's classmate,
Taylor Kaznowski '19, also had a fantastic showing against the Giants, as she recorded 48 assists and 15 digs. The Hamburg, New York, native's 48 assists are tied for the her second-highest total of the year.
SCOUTING THE RED DRAGONS
SUNY Oneonta enters this weekend's invite with a 10-17 overall record after dropping five of its last seven contests. In the highly competitive State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), the Red Dragons are 4-5, which places them fifth heading into the SUNYAC Championships. SUNY Oneonta ranks fourth in its conference with its .161 attack percentage. Leading the Red Dragons' offense has been freshman middle blocker Clara Culeton, who has hit at a noteworthy .320 clip, which ranks 58th nationally. Sophomore setter Jessica Fowler has guided SUNY Oneonta's attack with a team-high 913 assists. Fowler's assist total ranks second in the SUNYAC and 31st in all of Division III. Defensively, Melissa Voyer has tallied a team-best 68 blocks, which places her third in the conference.
SCOUTING THE BEARCATS
Similar to SUNY Oneonta, Baruch comes into the Dig Pink Invitational with a 10-16 overall record after falling in four straight matches. The Bearcats have played well in the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) portion of their schedule, as their 5-3 record places them fourth heading into the CUNYAC Championships. Baruch has excelled this year on the defensive end of the court with its conference-best 15.69 digs per set. The Bearcats' defensive performance has been an all-around effort, as Stella Chung (261), Danielle Naggar (259) and Wai Chang (200) have all tallied at least 200 digs this season. Offensively, Baruch has relied on Chung's 0.65 aces per set to spark the attack.
SCOUTING THE RAPTORS
Bard has struggled since its September 15 loss to the Soaring Eagles at the Oswego State Invitational. Including that match, the Raptors have dropped 17 of 19 contests, 12 of which were in straight sets. After its most recent tilt, a 3-1 loss to Mount Saint Mary College on Wednesday, Bard's overall record fell to 5-23. In Liberty League play, the Raptors are 0-7 and have not won a set. The busiest player on the Raptors' defense this year has been sophomore setter Emily Anastasi, who ranks second in the Liberty League and 22nd in the country in digs per set (5.73). On offense, Bard has been lethal at the service line, as it ranks second in the conference in service aces per set (2.25). The duo of Victoria Chou (0.47) and Philippine Alba (0.42) pace the Raptors in aces per set and rank among the league leaders in that category.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS
Hartwick has also struggled to find its footing after its early-season matchup against Elmira on September 23. Despite winning three of its four bouts following its tilt with EC, the Hawks stumble into this weekend's event as losers of seven straight, which sunk its overall record to 10-15. In its most recent on Saturday on Saturday, Hartwick suffered a 3-0 loss to St. John Fisher College, which dropped its league record to 4-4. With the loss, the Hawks finished in fifth place in the E8 standings and were eliminated from Empire 8 Conference Tournament contention. Leading the Hartwick attack this season has been freshman outside hitter Maria Sorriento, who paces the team with 223 kills. Sophomore setter Erin Russell has done her best to help Sorriento excel, as she has tallied a team-leading 462 assists. Defensively, freshman libero Katie Boak has been the team's most reliable digs producer with a team-high 3.45 digs per set.
