ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's volleyball team split its first two matches at the Dig Pink Invitational, hosted by SUNY Oneonta, on Friday evening at the Dewar Arena in Oneonta, New York. The Soaring Eagles fell in the first match by a 3-2 final score to the host Red Dragons, before topping Baruch College in the nightcap, 3-1.
In the first match of the day against SUNY Oneonta, EC and the Red Dragons traded sets for the duration of the match, as Elmira won the second and fourth sets, while Oneonta won the first, third and fifth. The Soaring Eagles came out of the gates hot, by recording scalding .205 and .235 hitting percentages in the first and second sets, respectively. The Red Dragons were ready for this attack, however, as they outhit EC in every set except the second. By the bout's end, SUNY Oneonta had bested Elmira in attack percentage by a .245-to-.186 clip, which helped them seal the non-conference contest.
In addition to their superior hitting efficiency, the Red Dragons also completed the bout with a 61-to-52 lead in assists and a 9-to-4 advantage in blocks. Elmira, on the other hand, held leads in digs (122-to-92) and service aces (11-to-7).
Leading the way for the Soaring Eagles in the bout was junior outside hitter
Natalie Schieder '19, who tallied a double-double with 28 digs and 24 kills, the former tying a career high. Fellow junior
Kasey Campbell '19 also had a career match, as she recorded a career-high 30 assists in the contest.
Tiara John '19 and
Taylor Kaznowski '19 also finished the match against the Red Dragons with double-doubles, as the former posted 21 digs and 11 kills and the latter recorded 46 assists and 17 digs.
In the second match of the day, the Soaring Eagles used a complete team effort to top Baruch by a 3-1 final score. In total, 15 players participated in the bout. The Elmira offense was clicking in the match, as they outhit the Bearcats by a .228-to-.057 Margin. EC also finished the bout with commanding leads in aces (13-to-5), assists (40-to-25) and digs (78-to-66).
Individually, Schieder had another massive performance, as she recorded 21 kills and seven digs to go along with her scalding .396 attack percentage. Kaznowski posted her second double-double of the evening with 23 assists and 15 digs. With 17 digs, Campbell led EC's defense for the second consecutive tilt. The duo of
Fallon Huck '21 and
Sabrina Didas '20 also had strong showings in the match, as Huck tallied a season-high two kills and Didas posted a season-best four kills.
