ALFRED, N.Y. -- Despite gaining a two-sets-to-one lead over Alfred University in Tuesday night's matchup, the Elmira College women's volleyball team could not fend loss a late run by the Saxons, resulting in a five-set Empire 8 Conference loss on the road.
The Soaring Eagles produce wins in the first and third sets to go up, 2-1, and after a kill from
Natalie Schieder '19 gave them a 1-0 lead to open the fourth set, the Saxons used several lengthy runs to come from behind. Kills from
Tiara John '19 and
Lauren Smith '21 gave EC its last lead of the fourth at 4-3, but Alfred rattled off nine of the next 12 points, forcing the Soaring Eagles to call a timeout down 12-7.
Elmira closed the gap to two points, 13-11, following kills from Schieder and
Karina Hastings '19, as well as a block at the net by the duo. However, a combined EC five errors over the next eight points allowed Alfred to regain a sizeable 19-13 advantage that proved to be large enough to level the score at two-sets apiece.
Similarly in the decisive fifth set, which was separated by just one point in favor of Alfred at 5-4, the Saxons built momentum on an insurmountable run. AU floored six kills and tossed up one ace over an 8-2 run, one that allowed the hosts to charge ahead 13-6. Elmira recovered following another timeout, this time an impressive 6-1 rally of its own, but it was too little, too late. Maddison VanEtten recorded the match point, one of her eight kills on the night, to capture the final set, 15-12.
Leading the Soaring Eagles with her eighth double-double of the 2017 campaign was Schieder, who amassed match highs with 20 kills and 23 digs. She hit two of her kills for the final two points of EC's tight 25-23 victory in the opening set. John and
Savannah Terry '21 each recorded nine kills offensively, while John added 10 digs, four blocks and a pair of aces. Terry accumulated a team-high .467 attack percentage (9k-2e-15ta) to go along with three blocks. Third-year setter
Taylor Kaznowski '19 also posted a double-double, her fifth of the year, with 41 assists and 13 digs.
