ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The 2017 fall season is quickly approaching its apex for the Elmira College women's tennis team, who will head to the Garden State on Saturday, October 7, for a 12:00 p.m. match against the Ducks of Stevens Institute of Technology.
LAST TIME OUT
Elmira is coming off of a 5-4 setback to the Highlanders of Houghton last time out. The Soaring Eagles captured two doubles points with wins at the No. 1 spot by
Megan Fitzgerald '18 and
Katy Jewett '21 and at No. 3 by
Cassie Brown '21 and
Eliza Johnson '21. Those two victories sent Elmira into the singles portion of the match with a 2-1 lead, but unfortunately EC was only able to secure two singles victories, as the Highlanders rallied for the win. Fitzgerald was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at the No. 1 singles position, while fellow senior
Emily Green '18 produced a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3. Fitzgerald's two victories solidified her spot as Elmira's all-time wins leader in singles (38) and doubles (40), making her EC's career wins leader across all categories.
SCOUTING STEVENS
After opening the season with a 6-3 loss to Nazareth, the Ducks of Stevens have strung together a seven-match winning streak to bring their overall record to 7-1 with a 6-1 mark inside the Empire 8 Conference. With six conference wins, the Ducks have already clinched an E8 postseason berth and will be eyeing a win on Saturday to secure a top-two seed in the league tournament. Isabella Calandra heads into the match as the reigning Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week, after helping the Ducks post a perfect 3-0 record in matches against Utica, Hartwick and Muhlenberg. Julia Earl has held down the No. 1 singles position for the Ducks and sports a 6-2 record. Her only losses of the season have come against Hartwick's Heidi Rice in three sets and St. John Fisher's Kaili Saffran in straights.
SERIES HISTORY
Elmira and Stevens will meet for the 11th time in their respective histories this weekend. The Ducks hold a commanding 9-1 lead in the series and head into the contest with a three-match winning streak against Elmira. EC's lone victory took place during the 2013 fall season, when the Purple and Gold clipped Stevens on the road, 5-3. Kayla Fitzgerald '15, big sister to current No. 1 singles player
Megan Fitzgerald '18, clinched the match for the Soaring Eagles at No. 4 singles.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Elmira women close out the 2017 fall season with a trip to Rochester, New York, on Monday, October 9, as the Soaring Eagles square off with Nazareth College in a 4:00 p.m. Empire 8 Conference bout.
