Men's Cross Country
Last Week: The Soaring Eagles traveled to Delhi, New York, to compete in the Bronco Classic, hosted by SUNY Delhi. Elmira finished sixth out of nine teams and was led by James Fritsche '18, who placed 13th out of the field of 66 runners with a 5K time of 18:19.84. The 13th-place finish for Fritsche was the best of his collegiate career, as he ended yet another race with the best time among EC runners. Ben Southern '18, Anthony Abate '19 and Jarritt Himmelreich '18 all recorded career-best placements at the event with 30th, 31st and 32nd-place finishes. Elmira also honored its graduating members of the Class of 2018 – Fritsche, Southern, Himmelreich and Jonathan Muller '18 – at the Murray Athletic Center on Saturday, October 7, as part of EC's "Run With the Seniors" and Family Weekend 5K race.

Next Race: Elmira is back in action this Saturday, October 14, when the Soaring Eagles travel to Geneva, New York, to take part in the Cross Country Only Championships (CCOC), hosted Hobart and William Smith Colleges. The event begins at 11:00 a.m.

Women's Cross Country
Last Week: Similar to the men's team, the Elmira women also took part in the Bronco Classic in Delhi, New York, last week. Although there was no team scoring, Elmira had a solid showing from its four runners. Headlining the group was freshman Claire Preisch '21, who claimed a third-place finish with a 5K time of 22:41.27. It was the highest finish of the rookie's debut season and it marked the sixth time she has paced the Purple and Gold to the finish line. Irene Zimmerman '19, Kaitlyn Ritz '18 and Caroline Connolly '19 finished 10th, 11th and 21st, respectively. Elmira also honored its graduating members of the Class of 2018 – Hannah Lundgren '18 and Ritz – at the Murray Athletic Center on Saturday, October 7, as part of EC's "Run With the Seniors" and Family Weekend 5K race.

Last Week: Elmira dropped a 4-0 decision to Empire 8 Conference leader St. John Fisher in the team's lone game of the week. The Soaring Eagles returned to the Murray Athletic Center for the first time in nearly a month on Saturday, October 7, as they opened a season-long four-game homestand. Elmira limited Fisher to one goal in what was a highly competitive first half. However, the Cardinals' offense found its rhythm in the second stanza with a trio of goals to put the contest out of reach. Julie Hockenberger '18 got the start in cage and made seven saves, while Tina O'Donnell '20 stopped six saves in a relief appearance. Â Â

Men's Soccer (3-8-1, 2-2-0 E8)
Last Week: The Soaring Eagles went 1-1 last week with a road defeat to No. 4 regionally-ranked Skidmore, before edging Utica by a 1-0 final score on the road in E8 action. Donte Donegal '18 delivered the game-winning goal for the Purple and Gold in 53rd minute, his second goal of the season, on an assist from Yaniv Kogan '18. The goal was Donegal's second game-winner of the season and his third tally against the Pioneers in the last two meetings. For Kogan, the assist was his first point and assist of his EC career. Jacob Mattice '21 got the start against Utica, the first of his collegiate career, and made three saves to preserve a clean sheet. Mattice became the third Elmira goalie to register a win and the first rookie to earn a shutout win in his first collegiate start since 2012. With the win over Utica, the Soaring Eagles are now in a three-way tie for fourth place in the league standings with Sage and St. John Fisher, both of whom EC will face over the next three weeks.

Next Game: Elmira will look to stay within the top half of the league standings, as the Soaring Eagles take on the conference's top team, Stevens, on Saturday, October 14. The opening kickoff for the E8 contest is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on EC's Campus Field.

Last Week: Elmira went on the road to face the Blue Devils of Fredonia in its lone contest of the week. After holding Fredonia to one goal in the first half, Elmira surrendered four goals in a 15:05 span in the second stanza, which all but sealed a non-conference victory for the Blue Devils. Elmira's Jordyn Rousselle '18 scored the team's lone goal of the night with just 19 seconds remaining on the clock. The goal, which was assisted by Kerri Clark '18, was Rousselle's team-leading fifth of the year and increased her season point total to 12, a new career best for the senior striker. Additionally, Clark's assist was her first of the season.

Last Week: Elmira suffered a 9-0 loss in its lone match of the week to the Ducks of Stevens, who clinched the No. 2 seed in the 2017 Empire 8 Conference Championships. Megan Fitzgerald '18 played in the most competitive match of the day, as she battled her opponent from Stevens in a three-set thriller. After winning the opening set 6-3, Fitzgerald fell in the second, 6-1, before coming up short in a super tiebreaker by a 10-5 score.

Next Match: The Elmira women conclude the fall portion of their schedule this evening, as they travel to Rochester, New York, to take on the Golden Flyers of Nazareth College. Today's contest will begin at 4:00 p.m. at the Mendon Racquet Club.

Last Week: The Soaring Eagles posted a 2-2 record last week with a 1-2 mark in Empire 8 matches. Elmira opened the week on Tuesday, October 3, with a heartbreaking five-set loss to Alfred, before edging Wells two days later on Speidel Gymnasium in a five-set thriller. EC capped the week with a 1-1 showing in Utica, New York, with a three-set loss to St. John Fisher and a four-set victory over the Pioneers of Utica. Taylor Kaznowski '19 amassed 168 assists over the four matches, as well as 38 digs, nine kills, eight service aces and a trio of blocks. The junior setter hit a career milestone in the match against Fisher, as Kaznowski became the eighth player in program history to eclipse 2,000 career assists and heads into this week's matches with 2,067 assists to her name. Natalie Scheider '19 paced the Purple and Gold's offense with 76 kills (4.47 per set) and finished the week with a team-high 77 digs, six service aces and a pair of blocks. Schieder produced four double-doubles, which included a pair of 20-plus kills outings, as well as two 20-plus dig performances. She floored a season-high 25 kills against Utica and made a career-high 28 digs against Wells. Â
