Men's Basketball Readies for Home Finale Against Alfred

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's basketball team welcomes Alfred University to Speidel Gymnasium for its 2016-17 home finale on Tuesday, February 14. The contest between the Soaring Eagles and the Saxons is scheduled to tip-off at 8:00 p.m.  

PORRETT POURING IT ON
  • With 23 points on Thursday, Justin Porrett '19 tied a season-high mark that he set against Houghton College on January 17th.
  • With this performance, the Dumont, New Jersey, product passed Hayden Harkins '18 for the team's scoring lead with 10.3 points per game.
  • The 6-foot-1-inch guard has paced the Soaring Eagles in scoring in five games this season.
  • The second-year Soaring Eagle has been crucial to EC's offense, as he paces the team in points and assists (4.5) per game.
  • Porrett's 4.5 assist per game rank second in the E8, only behind Brendan Wind of Nazareth, who averages 6.7 helpers.

DAVIS GOING OUT ON A HIGH
  • Senior forward Matt Davis '17 will be playing his final game at Speidel Gymnasium today.
  • He has preferred the friendly confines of Speidel to the road this season, as he sits third on the team in scoring with 8.3 points per game at home, behind just Henry Cuffee '19 (12.6) and Porrett (11.3).
  • The local Horseheads, New York, product is also a perfect 4-for-4 from 3-point distance at home this year, which accounts for four of his seven career treys.
  • Davis also reached his career-high-points total this season with his 18 point-game which came on February 3rd against Stevens Institute of Technology.
  • In that matchup, he went a respectable 8-for-9 from the floor, including a perfect 2-for-2 from behind the arc.
  • Davis has also increased his total scoring output this season, as he has already almost doubled his previous career career-high 44 points from last season with 95 points.

ALFRED AT A GLANCE
  • The Saxons enter today's contest playing inconstant basketball of late, which has resulted in a 9-14 overall record and a 6-8 standing in conference.
  • This up-and-down play is illustrated by Alfred's recent results, which included a 107-80 win over Stevens (17-6, 10-4 E8) on Friday and a 66-62 loss to Utica College (8-15, 8-6 E8) on Saturday.
  • The Saxons have excelled this season at limiting turnovers, as they average 12.6 per game, the second-lowest total in the Empire 8.
  • Alfred's success at restricting mistakes has them ranked second in the conference in turnover margin (plus-2.04).
  • Senior guard Tyler Seelman has been the Saxons' main offensive threat all season, as he paces the team in points (14.8), assists (2.3) and 3-point field goals (2.0) per game.
  • The 5-foot-11-inch guard is the only player on the team to average above 10.0 points per game and is the lone Saxon to start all 23 games.
  • Seelman has also been efficient from the charity stripe, with his 85.7 free throw shooting percentage, a mark that ranks second in the Empire 8 and 49th in the country.
  • Sophomore Sage Brown has been Alfred's main rebounding threat, as his 6.1 boards per game paces the team.
