Baseball Concludes Armstrong Invitational With Loss vs. Mitchell

Records: Mitchell (2-1), Elmira (1-3)
Location: Fayetteville, N.C. - Armstrong-Shelley Field

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Elmira College baseball team concluded the Armstrong Invitational, hosted by Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina, on the losing end of a 19-4 decision against Mitchell College on Sunday.

Trailing 1-0 after giving up an unearned run in the first inning, the Soaring Eagles plated three in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-1 lead. An RBI base hit from Bryce Plante '18 drove in Nate Hanner '18 to knot the game. Hayden Rothenberg '17 then picked up two RBIs with a single through the left side that plated both Plante and Cameron Heggie '18.

The lead didn't last long, however, as the Mariners scored five runs in the third to take a lead they would never relinquish.

Plante scored Elmira's only other run in the fourth inning. The third-year shortstop reached base on an infield single, advanced to second on a double steal attempt, and came around to score on a fielding error by Mitchell's second baseman.

Turning Point
After a clean game in Saturday's 2-1 victory over Rutgers University-Camden, the Soaring Eagles committed five errors on defense against the Mariners. To make matters even worse, EC's pitching staff walked eight, hit four opposing batters, and threw six wild pitches. Those self-inflicted wounds allowed Mitchell to score 19 runs, eight of which were unearned.
