HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton College hit the Elmira College baseball team hard in the final game of their Empire 8 Conference series, which was made up on Monday evening in Houghton, New York, after being postponed on Friday. The Highlanders won the contest, 16-6, while taking the 2017 series from the Soaring Eagles, two-games-to-one.
The Highlanders racked up 19 hits, tied for the most EC has surrendered to an opponent this season, including a pair of home runs. They never trailed after collecting a combined five runs in the second and third innings.
Down 5-0, the Soaring Eagles pushed across three runs in the fourth and fifth frames to come within two, with two RBIs coming off the bat of freshman
Jansen Crossley '20. Crossley, who had one of the best games of his young career at the plate, doubled in the fourth, allowing
Dennis Rudolph '18 to score from first. In the fifth, a Rudolph RBI single and Crossley RBI groundout reduced to deficit to 5-3.
Houghton, however, would go on to score once in the bottom of the fifth, three times in the sixth and seventh, and added four more runs in the eighth to put the game well out of reach.
Turning Point
Elmira, which scored 20 runs on 20 hits last time it faced Houghton, was well within striking distance entering the sixth inning. However, the 6-3 Highlander lead quickly turned into a six-run advantage in the sixth, beginning with Bryan Hodge's solo homer to lead off the inning. EC starter
Conor Bawiec '18 was relieved shortly thereafter, and the bullpen was tagged with seven more runs in just 2.1 innings of work, all but sealing the victory for the Highlanders.
