Men's Cross Country
Last Week: The Elmira men finished in 12th place at this past weekend's Hamilton College Short Course Invitational, hosted by the Continentals in Clinton, New York. Senior James Fritsche '18 led the pack with a 129th-place finish with a 5K time of 18:12.30 and was the first Soaring Eagle to cross the finish line for a second consecutive week. Jarritt Himmelreich '18 and Jonathan Muller '18 set new personal records at the 5K with times of 19:37.00 and 24:37.30, respectively.
Next Race: The Elmira men will race again next Saturday, September 16, when the Purple and Gold head to Oswego, New York, to compete in the Oswego State Invitational. Start time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
Women's Cross Country
Last Week: After setting the college's race-time record in the 4K last week, freshman Claire Preisch '21 broke her own record at last weekend's Hamilton College Short Course Invitational. Preisch trimmed nearly two full minutes off of her previous record-setting time with a 4K mark of 16:47.00 in Clinton, New York. Her race time was good enough to earn the rookie EC Athlete of the Week accolades. Caitlin Malanowski '20 finished next for the Purple and Gold with a solid time of 17:42.00.
Next Race: The Soaring Eagles will race again next Saturday, September 16, when they travel to compete in the Oswego State Invitational, which is set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
Field Hockey (0-4, 0-1 E8)
Last Week: Elmira suffered a pair of heartbreaking one-goal losses over the weekend to Hartwick and Keystone, dropping EC's record to 0-4 on the young season. Emily Selbert '20 and Janie Kempf '21 gave the Soaring Eagles a 2-1 lead midway through the first half against Hartwick, as both players tallied their first career goals for the Purple and Gold. The Hawks answered with back-to-back strikes at the 21:38 and 47:22 marks, solidifying a 3-2 Empire 8 Conference loss for the Elmira women. Matilda Kennedy-Butler '19 was credited with her first career assist in the setback. Then in Sunday's weekend finale against Keystone, EC created numerous scoring chances with advantages in shots, 16-7, and penalty corners, 13-2, but were unable to capitalize on those opportunities, leaving the door open for the Giants to score the game-winning goal with 4:58 remaining in regulation. Tina O'Donnell '20 racked up 14 saves in the loss to Hartwick, while Julie Hockenberger '18 made three stops in the setback to the Giants.
Next Game: The Purple and Gold will be in search of their first win of the season this Wednesday, September 13, when they travel to face the Lakers of Oswego State. The non-conference contest is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.

Next Event: The Soaring Eagles head to the Lakeside Country Club for the Keuka College Invitational, hosted by the Wolves at the on Wednesday, September 13. The Lakeside Country Club is located in the hills overlooking beautiful Keuka Lake just south of Penn Yan, New York, the 18-hole, Par 72 golf course measures 6,631 yards and features watered fairways. Elmira will be hoping for better weather, and results, at this mid-week invitational.

Next Event: Elmira opens the fall portion of the 2017 schedule this weekend with a trip to Clifton Springs Country Club for the two-day William Smith Invitational. The Clifton Springs Country Club is located one mile south of Clifton Springs, New York, in the warm and friendly countryside setting of Ontario County only a short drive from Herons' campus in Geneva. The course offers a highly-rated, 18-hole championship layout known for its well-manicured fairways, glistening ponds, and challenging greens.

Men's Soccer (1-3-1, 0-0-0 E8)
Last Week: Elmira went 0-2-1 in a three-game week that saw the Soaring Eagles travel to Buffalo and Ithaca, New York, before hosting their first nationally-ranked team of the season, No. 13 SUNY Cortland, at Campus Field. Senior center back Rodney Smith '19 scored his team-leading second goal of the season in a 1-1 double-overtime tie against D'Youville. The two goals are a career best for the Parkville, Maryland, native. Elmira concluded the week with a pair of shutout losses to some stiff competition in Ithaca College, 2-0, and 13th-ranked Cortland, 3-0. Anthony Lipp '21 started in two games and amassed 13 saves, while Jacob Liese '20 appeared in two games with one start and finished with 13 stops.
Next Game: Elmira will look to snap a three-game winless streak this Wednesday, September 13, as the Purple and Gold travel to Rochester, New York, to face the Tigers of RIT. The non-conference bout is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.

Last Week: The Soaring Eagles took on a pair of Liberty League opponents, Bard and Vassar, at the Vassar College Invitational last weekend. EC opened the invite, which took place in Poughkeepsie, New York, with a gut-wrenching 1-0 loss to Bard. Elmira weathered the Raptors' attack for most the contest, but a late goal in the 88th minute by Avalon Qian proved to be too much to overcome that late in the contest. The Purple and Gold concluded the invite with an 8-0 setback to the host Brewers, who are led by Head Coach Corey Holton '05, a 2005 graduate of Elmira College. Rachel Grampp '18 finished the week with 13 saves in 135 minutes of action, while sophomore transfer Ali DeSalvatore '20 made her EC debut against the Brewers and came up with eight stops.
Next Game: Elmira returns to the pitch on Saturday, September 16, as the EC women travel to North Country to face the Bears of SUNY Potsdam. The non-league contest, which is Elmira's lone game of the week, is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.

Women's Tennis (1-3, 1-1 E8)
Last Week: Elmira came up short in a pair of home matches at the Murray Athletic Center, falling to E8 rival St. John Fisher, 8-1, before dropping a tight 5-4 contest to Oswego State. Megan Fitzgerald '18 had another banner week for the Soaring Eagles, as the senior posted a 3-1 combined record. She went 2-0 at first singles to remain unbeaten on the year and extend her winning streak to nine consecutive matches, a mark that dates back to the 2016-17 season. She teamed up with rookie Katy Jewett '21 to post an impressive 8-2 win at first doubles against the Lakers, a win that improved the duo's record this season to 3-1. Rookies Eliza Johnson '21 and Cassie Brown '21 also teamed up for a win against the Lakers, an 8-6 victory at the No. 3 spot. Emily Green '18 picked up her second singles win of the season with a straight-set victory over the Lakers at the No. 3 position.
Next Match: The Soaring Eagles will hit the road for back-to-back away matches this weekend, as they challenge Sage in E8 action on Saturday, September 16, before taking on non-league foe Penn College the following day. Both matches are scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Women's Volleyball (3-1, 0-0 E8)
Last Week: After opening the year with a loss to Pitt-Bradford, the Elmira women bounced back nicely with a trio of 3-0 sweeps at its home quad match at Speidel Gymnasium. The Soaring Eagles collected wins over Alfred State – a win that snapped a five-match skid against the Pioneers – SUNY Delhi and Cazenovia. Natalie Schieder '19 paced the EC attack with 43 kills (3.58 per set) and a solid .343 attack percentage, which included an ultra-high .643 attack percentage in the win over the Wildcats of Cazenovia. She also produced a team-high 42 digs and finished third on the team with six service aces. Fellow classmate Taylor Kaznowski '19 produced 104 assists, which includes a pair of 30-plus assist outings in wins over SUNY Delhi and Alfred State. Rookie Lauren Smith '21 had a fantastic debut for Elmira with 23 kills and 26 digs, both of which rank second on the team. Those numbers helped Smith garner Empire 8 Conference Rookie of the Week status.
Next Match: EC returns to action tomorrow night when the Purple and Gold host the Mustangs of Morrisville State in non-league action. The opening serve at Speidel Gymnasium is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
