ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's soccer team opened the 2017 Empire 8 Conference slate with a 1-1 double overtime draw against the Saxons of Alfred University Saturday afternoon at Campus Field.
Jordyn Rousselle '18 netted EC's lone goal in the 84th minute to level the score and force the extra sessions, but neither offense could find the back of the net in overtime despite good looks on both ends of the field.
The Soaring Eagles were unable to place a shot on goal in the first half, in which the Saxons held a 7-to-2 advantage in overall shots. Elmira netminder
Rachel Grampp '18 made a trio of saves to preserve the scoreless tie in the opening period, including a diving stop just inside the left post to deny AU's Emily Wright in the 21st minute.
Although Alfred's offense generated more shots, the Purple and Gold had a handful close chances on lengthy passes and through balls, most of which were just a few steps too long for EC's strikers. One such pass came from Rousselle on a counter attack in the 32nd minute, but Alfred goalie Sammy Jo Shanahan was able to smother the ball before
Kerri Clark '18 could get a touch.
After a slow start, the Soaring Eagles began to pick up the pace in the offensive zone in the second half. With the game still scoreless about five minutes into the second period, Clark outran her defender to the corner and sent the ball inside the box to
Taylor Hanson '21, but the freshman forward was unable to settle the ball at her feet and register a shot attempt before Shanahan raced out of the net to cover it. In the 63rd minute, Clark made a similar run into the far corner, but this time lifted a shot high over the crossbar.
The Saxons tallied their lone goal in the 74th minute to take a 1-0 advantage. Leigha Allen dribbled the ball into the box, turned back and found a wide-open Wright crashing towards the net. From about 15 yards out, Alfred's leading scorer ripped a shot to the left side, which bounced off of the far post and caromed in.
Alfred's lead lasted a little over 10 minutes, before Rousselle deposited her team-leading fourth goal of the season to level at score at 1-1. In the 84th minute,
Kate DeLellis '18 gathered a throw-in and lofted a high pass towards the goal. Rousselle took one touch with her right foot and fired her second touch past Shanahan, who came off of her line in an attempt to punch the ball away.
Grampp faced a trio of shots from the Saxons in the second overtime period, the first which was just high of the crossbar off the foot of Allen only 53 seconds in. The senior goalie preserved the 1-1 draw with another big stop inside the final minute of play, this one coming off of a Lexi Riffelbach shot attempt from the top left corner of the box.
In Their Own Words...
Head Coach
Kaitlyn Mallernee on her team's performance in the Empire 8 opener...
"Considering how hard everyone worked, demonstrating tremendous heart, it's frustrating not to come out of the draw with a win. I do believe we had a lot more positives to take away from today's match, and we will continue to focus on that as we continue to grow and build as a family. Each day we are improving and fine tuning what we need in order to positively move us forward in conference."
