Upcoming Event: The Elmira College baseball team will be in action this week for an inter-squad scrimmage at Historic Dunn Field. Beginning on Friday, September 29, Elmira will play in the Purple & Gold World Series, which will feature players from the Soaring Eagle squad against one another. Friday's start time is set for 5:00 p.m. at Dunn Field and play will resume on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. There will be no admission fee to watch the team and there will also not be any concessions provided at the scrimmage. Men's Cross Country
Last Week: The Elmira men traveled to compete in the Wildcat Classic over the weekend, but did not field a full team to receive a team result. James Fritsche '18 led EC with a 48th-place finish with a time of 30:16.60, the fastest 8K time by an Elmira runner this season. Anthony Abate '19 was not far behind with a time of 32:19.30, good for 73rd place, as he shaved over a full minute off of his previous best 8K time.

Next Race: Elmira will race next at the Cazenovia College Homecoming Invitational on Saturday, September 30. The race is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. in Cazenovia, New York.

Women's Cross Country
Last Week: Elmira saw a pair of runners claim top-30 finishes at last weekend's Wildcat Classic, hosted by SUNY Poly in Marcy, New York. Claire Preisch '21 and Caitlin Malanowski '20 claimed 21st and 27th place finishes at the 6K race with times of 25:42.20 and 26:27.80, respectively. Those two scores helped Elmira take home seventh place at the eight-team event. Elmira was three points shy of moving up to sixth place and five points away from a fifth-place finish.

Next Race: The EC women will return to action on Saturday, September 30, when they head to Cazenovia, New York to compete in the Cazenovia College Homecoming Invitational. The Soaring Eagles will take part in a 6K race that is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m.

Field Hockey (1-7, 0-3 E8)
Last Week: Elmira posted a 1-1 record last week with a one-goal win over Brockport and a road loss to Stevens. EC began the week by edging the Golden Eagles of Brockport, 2-1, on Bob Boozer Field in Brockport, New York. Janie Kempf '21 was exceptional in the win, as the freshman talent scored both goals, including the game-winner at the 54:55 mark in the second half. Seniors Atu Machika '18 and Sarah McCaffrey '18 were credited with assists on Kempf's goals, while fellow classmate Julie Hockenberger '18 made six saves in a winning effort between the posts. Kempf continued her scoring ways the following game, as Elmira dropped a 7-2 decision to the Ducks of Stevens. Kempf scored her third goal of the week, and fifth of the season, at the 60:45 mark of the second half on an assist from Alison Mariano, who also scored a goal against the Ducks at the 49:29 mark. The tally from Mariano was her third of the season, while Kempf's five goals lead the Soaring Eagles.

Next Game: The Purple and Gold resume non-league action on Wednesday, September 27, with a short trip up Route 13 to face the Bombers of Ithaca College. Game-time is set for 5:00 p.m. at Ithaca's Higgins Stadium. Â

Men's Golf
Last Week: The Soaring Eagles took home a ninth-place finish at the Utica College Invitational, hosted by the Pioneers at the Yahnundasis Golf Club in New Hartford, New York. Elmira logged a team score of 732 (+164) at the invite and was 22 strokes off of the pace set by eighth-place Keuka College. Charl Pretorius '19 paced the Purple and Gold with a 28-over par 170, good enough to land the South African native in a three-way tie for 21st place. Matt McGaugh '21 was EC's next finisher in 41st place with a card of 185 (+43).

Next Event: Elmira will have the luxury of playing on its home course at the Elmira Country Club next time out, as the Soaring Eagles host the EC Fall Invitational on Tuesday, September 26. The 18-hole tournament will begin with a shotgun start promptly at 10:00 a.m.

Women's Golf
Last Week: The Elmira women were just three strokes shy of tying first-place Keuka at this past weekend's Utica College Invitational, hosted by the Pioneers at the Yahnundasis Golf Club in New Hartford, New York. Elmira fired a two-day score of 758 (+87) to finish second at the event, that after ending day one in third place. Audrey Clarke '18 led Elmira at the invite once again with fourth-place finish with a score of 168 (+11). She carded a score of 84 on both days, which included three birdied on day one, as well as a birdie and an eagle on day two. Meghan Fonfara '18 was seven strokes shy of Clarke's pace with a 175 (+17), good for sixth place at the event. Fonfara ended her round on Sunday with a pair of birdies, including one on hole No. 18.

Next Event: Elmira will look to continue its strong play this Tuesday, September 26, when the Soaring Eagles host the EC Fall Invitational on their home course at the Elmira Country Club. Action begins at 10:00 a.m. with a shotgun start.

Men's Soccer (2-6-1, 1-1-0 E8)
Last Week: Elmira went 1-1-0 last week with a one-goal loss at home to Brockport on Monday and a 2-0 shutout road victory over Nazareth on Saturday. The win over the Golden Flyers was Elmira's first since 2012, which helped vault the Soaring Eagles into a five-way tie for third place in the Empire 8 Conference standings. Michael Courtney '21 scored the game-winning goal against Nazareth in the 12th minute, as the rookie fired the ball top shelf from eight yards out on a nice one-two passing play by Tony Barraco '18 and Donte Donegal '18. Barraco was credited with the assist, his first of the year, while Courtney's goal was the first of his collegiate career. Elmira, New York, native Brendan Wise '18 sealed the win with his first goal of the year, and second of his career, in the 55th minute. Wise one-timed a shot from six yards out thanks to a fantastic individual effort by Donegal, who stole the ball at the corner flag, before beating a defender and sliding a pass to Wise for the easy finish. Second-year netminder Jacob Liese '20 was credited with the win, as the Massapequa, New York, native made five saves to record his first collegiate victory, as well as his first career clean sheet. For his efforts, Liese was tabbed as the Empire 8 Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Next Game: After playing nine games in 23 days, the Soaring Eagles will get a much needed rest heading into their next contest on Saturday, September 29, against Alfred University. The Empire 8 Conference tilt is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Elmira's grass pitch at Campus Field.

Last Week: Elmira enjoyed its most successful week of the season, as the Purple and Gold went unbeaten in matches against Wells and Alfred. The Soaring Eagles clipped Wells in an overtime thriller, 3-2, on Tuesday afternoon, before playing the Saxons of Alfred to a 1-1 double-overtime draw on Saturday. Jordyn Rousselle '18 provided the offense for Elmira with three goals on the week, including Tuesday's game-winner and Saturday's game-tying tally. She scored twice against the Express of Wells, her second of which came just 1:33 into the overtime session, as she logged her second career multi-goal performance. Hailey Boris '21 scored the other goal in EC's win over Wells, the first goal of her collegiate career, while Celina Spitznogle '19 was credited with the assist, her first as a Soaring Eagle. Sara Kazerouni '18 was also credited with an assist in the win over Wells, as she assisted on Rousselle's game-winning strike. In Saturday's draw against Alfred, EC fell behind on a late goal by the Saxons in the 74th minute, but a beautiful cross by Kate DeLellis '18 found Rousselle in the box where she volleyed the ball to herself before firing it over the keeper's shoulder for the eventual game-tying score. Rachel Grampp '18 started in goal for Elmira in both games and finished with 13 saves. She made six saves in the win over Wells, the first win of her collegiate career, and another seven in the draw against Alfred.

Next Game: The Soaring Eagles return to action this Wednesday, September 27, when the Elmira women travel to take on the Hawks of Hartwick College. The Empire 8 Conference contest is scheduled to take place under the lights at Hartwick's Elmore Field at 7:00 p.m.

Women's Tennis (2-6, 1-3 E8)
Last Week: Elmira came up empty in a pair of matches to Alfred and Fredonia, however, the highlight from the weekend was senior captain Megan Fitzgerald '18 becoming EC's all-time wins leader. The Thomaston, Connecticut, native went 3-1 over the weekend to bring her career win total to 76, which surpassed former teammate Ayaka Yoshino '16 for the No. 1 spot in the EC record books. Fitzgerald also tied the program's all-time record for singles wins (37) and doubles victories (39). She teamed up with Katy Jewett '21 for a pair of wins at No. 1 doubles, as the duo improved to 7-1 on the year and extended their winning streak to five matches. Sarah Hill '19 and Danielle Bliss '19 also picked up wins over the weekend, both of which came in singles action. Hill was a 6-1, 6-4 winner against Alfred at No. 4 singles, while Bliss earned her first win of the year against Fredonia, 6-4, 6-3. Â

Women's Volleyball (7-6, 0-3 E8)
Last Week: It was a challenging week to say the least, as Elmira went 0-4 with a 0-3 record in Empire 8 Conference matches. Elmira opened the week on the road with a 3-0 loss to SUNY Cortland, before taking a pair of 3-0 losses at Speidel Gymnasium to Stevens and Hartwick. EC closed out the weekend with a four-set defeat to Nazareth. Natalie Schieder '19 led Elmira with 45 kills (3.46 per set) and 44 digs (3.38 per set). She produced a monster double-double against the Golden Flyers of Nazareth with 20 kills and 20 digs, both of which are season highs for the junior outside-hitter. Taylor Kaznowski '19 logged 95 of Elmira's 112 assists over the four matches for a per set average of 7.31. She also had a pair of double-doubles against Cortland (16a-11d) and Hartwick (26a-10d).

Next Match: Elmira will be hoping to bounce back at this weekend's Canton Classic, hosted by St. Lawrence and SUNY Canton. The Soaring Eagles will face two teams they have already bested earlier this season in Cazenovia, who EC opens the tournament against on Friday, September 29 at 6:00 p.m., and SUNY Canton.
