MORRISVILLE, N.Y. -- Although the Elmira College field hockey team held advantages in both shots and penalty corners, the host Mustangs of Morrisville State were able to defeat the Soaring Eagles by a final score of 3-1 on Sunday.
The Purple and Gold outshot the Mustangs, 20-to-14, and nearly doubled their second-half total, but it was Morrisville State who scored twice in the second half to break a 1-1 halftime stalemate en route to the win.
Down by one after Elizabeth Leva tally in the 16th minute, the Soaring Eagles leveled the score at 1-all in the 30th minute. Forward
Alison Mariano '18 netted the first goal of her senior campaign by ripping a shot past Morrisville goalie Emma Gottung from the left side of the shooting arc.
Second-year goalie
Tina O'Donnell '20, who recorded a career high with 22 stops on Saturday afternoon in EC's season opener against Scranton, was tested early in the second half. Following a penalty corner she made back-to-back stops in a matter of seconds, but an untimely foul gave the Mustangs another penalty corner in the 40th minute. This time, Heather Cummings tipped the ball into the cage off of Lauren Kellum's initial shot for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
O'Donnell would finish with seven saves while playing 48:32 in goal for EC.
Julie Hockenberger '18 played the remaining 21:28 but did not face a shot.
Elmira went on the offensive in the 44th and 45th minutes, as it posted a trio shots and one penalty corner in a span of 1:13. Freshman
Janie Kempf '21, who led all players with seven shots in her second career outing, had a pair of good looks at the cage, but her first was stuffed by Gottung and the rebound went wide of its mark.
After Morrisville pulled ahead 3-1 on a Kellum goal with 22:28 remaining in regulation, EC frantically tried to generate some offense, as the Soaring Eagles registered the last eight shot attempts of the game. However, only two of those shots were on target and both of those were turned aside by Gottung, who finished with five saves for the Mustangs.
