ELMIRA N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's volleyball team prepares for the EC Quad-Match on Friday and Saturday, September 8-9. The Soaring Eagles begin their busy weekend on Friday with a 6:00 p.m. showdown against SUNY Delhi.
LAST TIME OUT
Elmira opened the 2017 campaign on Wednesday, September 9, with a road three-set loss at the hands of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. Despite the setback, junior outside hitter
Natalie Schieder '19 hit the ground running, as she tallied a 13-kill-12-dig double-double against the Panthers. The Alden, New York, native became the first Soaring Eagle to post a double-double in a season-opening match since Taryn Rumsey '14 tallied 21 kills and 10 digs in the 2013 opener.
SCOUTING SUNY DELHI
The Broncos opened their season on Wednesday, September 6, with a 3-1 setback at the hands of The Sage Colleges. Wednesday's loss continues recent struggles for Delhi, as it ended the 2016 campaign on a four-match losing streak on its way to a 9-22 overall record. The Broncos will rely heavily on junior outside hitter Kristen Maslanka, who paced all returners with 168 kills from a year ago.
SCOUTING ALFRED STATE
The Pioneers come into this weekend's quad match with a winless 0-3 record after three straight sweeps to start the 2017 campaign. These early-season struggles are vastly different to the team's start to the 2016 season, as Alfred State began last season on a 12-match winning streak. With these early struggles, Alfred State will have to look to senior outside hitter Bryanna Godfrey to help turn the tide in the early season. Godfrey's 2016 accolades include being named both a USCAA All-American and All-Independent First-Teamer and an ECAC Division III North Women's Volleyball All-Star Second-Teamer.
SCOUTING CAZENOVIA
The Wildcats have struggled to find their footing to start the season, as they have dropped their first five matches. With a team-best 23 kills to start the year, senior outside hitter Kassondra Kreppein has shown why she is the Wildcats' main offensive threat. Freshman Ashley Anastas has also made some noise in the first week of games, as she has hit a team-leading .174 clip through the first five match of the year.
UP NEXT
Elmira returns to action on Tuesday, September 12, with a home bout against the Mustangs of Morrisville State. The non-conference match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. at Speidel Gymnasium.
