Soaring Eagles Weekly, January 30, 2018

Men's Basketball (3-15, 1-8 E8)                                                                         
Last Week: The Soaring Eagles had a tough three-game stretch over a five-day span last week, dropping three Empire 8 bouts. On Tuesday, Justin Porrett '19 racked up his first career triple-double in a 101-91 defeat to Nazareth at home (18pts-12ast-10rbs).  Thursday's 101-72 setback against Hartwick saw a season-best 16-points from sophomore Alex Ischiropoulos '20, who finished the bout with four 3-pointers. On Saturday, junior Henry Cuffee '19 scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds in a 104-77 loss to the Saxons of Alfred.

Next Game: The Soaring Eagles have a week between their last game and the upcoming contest against The Sage Colleges on Saturday, February 3. The Purple and Gold will look to bounce back in front of a home crowd during the 36th Annual Athletics Alumni Weekend, which is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center in Pine Valley, New York.

Women's Basketball (11-7, 3-6 E8)
Last Week: The Purple and Gold went 2-1 in the three games played last week. In Tuesday's thrilling 66-62 home victory over Nazareth, senior guard Emily Green '18 scored a game-high 19 points after going 3-for-5 from 3-point range. On Thursday, the Soaring Eagles dropped an E8 tilt to Hartwick, 67-57. Junior guard Lindsey Heaton '19 paced the team in scoring with 17 points against the Hawks. Saturday's 69-53 win over Alfred saw a 20-point performance from senior guard Danielle Cleary '18, which marks the fifth time this season she has scored 20-or-more points in a game. With four free throws against the Saxons, Cleary tied the program's all-time record with 366 in her career.

Next Game: The Soaring Eagles welcome the Gators of The Sage Colleges to the Murray Athletic Center on Saturday, February 3, to conclude this season series against newest members of the Empire 8 Conference. Tip-off for the contest is slated for 4:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center as a part of the 36th Annual Athletics Alumni Weekend.

Men's Ice Hockey (11-8-2, 6-4-2 UCHC)
Last Week: The Soaring Eagles completed a weekend United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) sweep of Nazareth and Utica on Friday and Saturday at the Murray Athletic Center. Elmira began play with a tense 3-2 triumph over Naz on Friday. EC was paced in the game by its top line, as Connor Powell '20 (1g-2a-3p), Matthew Cuce '20 (1g-2a-3p) and Nick Ford '20 (1g) finished the night as three of the team's four point-getters. Rookie defender Ryan Blais '21 also got on the board with an assist on Powell's game-winner in the third period. Friday's win was followed up by a 5-1 upset victory over No. 7/7-ranked Utica the following night to complete a season sweep of the Pioneers. Freshman goalie Jake Sabourin '21 was fantastic in the victory, as he made 36 saves to hold the fourth-ranked offense in the country to just one goal. Offensively, Elmira received multi-point performances from Ford (2g-1a-3p), Cuce (1g-1a-2p) and Anthony Parrucci '19 (2a-2p).   
 
Next Game: The EC men will hit the ice next on Friday, February 2, when the Soaring Eagles welcome Neumann to the Murray Athletic Center for a UCHC tilt as a part of the 36th Annual Athletics Alumni Weekend. The opening puck drop of the conference bout is slated for 7:00 p.m.

Women's Ice Hockey (16-2-1, 10-0-0 UCHC) 
Last Week: The Purple and Gold won all three of their games played last week, besting Trinity (Conn.) on Tuesday, before earning a pair of victories over Lebanon Valley on Saturday and Sunday. EC opened the busy week with a 5-0 triumph over the Bantams in Hartford, Connecticut. Kelcey Crawford '18 led the Soaring Eagles' defense with 19 saves to earn the shutout, while the EC offense saw four multi-point scorers. Elmira began the two-game set against Lebanon Valley with a 9-0 victory on Saturday in the 2018 Dutchmen Outdoor Classic, hosted at an outdoor rink at Hersheypark Stadium. Sarah Hughson '18 led the way for EC with game highs in points (4) and assists (3). Hughson was joined by 12 other Soaring Eagles that also notched at least one point in the win. The following afternoon, the Purple and Gold skated to a 6-0 victory with another balanced offensive effort that saw 13 Elmira skaters finish with at least one point. Ari Smith '18 and Louisa Lippiatt Durnell '18 led all players with one goal and one assist for two points apiece. Freshman Elizabeth Hanson '21 backstopped EC to the victory with nine saves, her third win of the season.
 
Next Game: The Soaring Eagles will continue UCHC play on Saturday, February 3, with a home bout against William Smith College as part of the 36th Annual Elmira College Athletics Alumni Weekend. The bout is slated to start at 3:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center.

Men's Volleyball (5-2, 0-0 UVC) 
Last Week: The Purple and Gold had a successful weekend hosting the Elmira College Invitational, where the team went 4-0 over the two-day event. On Friday, the Soaring Eagles claimed back-to-back sweeps over Keuka and Thiel. Saturday's matches included a 3-1 win over D'Youville and a 3-2 victory over Wells. Senior Ryan McDonough '18 had a team-high 41 kills throughout the weekend and Matthew Buffum '18 led the team with 17 total blocks. Only five games into his first year with Elmira, Jose Malave '21 set the program record for the best hitting percentage in a single match, flooring 14 kills with just one error on 15 tries (.867), which helped the San Juan, Puerto Rico, native earn E8 and United Volleyball Conference (UVC) Rookie of the Week accolades.

Next Game: The Soaring Eagles travel to Cincinnati, Ohio to take part in a tri-match Mount St. Joseph, where the team will face off against the No. 5-ranked Stars of Dominican (Ill.) in the first match of the weekend at 6:30 p.m.
