Janie Kempf '21 scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season, as the Elmira College field hockey team dropped a 7-1 decision to Empire 8 Conference rival Utica College on Saturday.
Sophomore defender
Liz Shephard '21 found Kempf on a penalty corner in the 50th minute of the contest, and the New Woodstock, New York, native buried the ball into the back of the cage for the 14th goal of her EC career. The score moved Kempf into a three-way tie for seventh in program history for career goals, equaling Nicole Rotolo '06 and Sarah Dake '06. With the assist, Shephard collected the first point of her collegiate career.
Kempf's goal, however, proved to be too little, too late for the Soaring Eagles, as it cut the Pioneers' deficit down to 6-1 with 20:09 to play in the second half. Utica, which entered halftime with a 3-0 lead, finished with a sizable advantage in shots, 34-to-6, and penalty corners, 12-to-3.
In goal,
Tina O'Donnell '20 recorded double-digit saves for the eighth time this fall. The junior goalie from Kutztown, Pennsylvania, logged 19 stops while playing at 70 minutes against Utica. With 171 saves on the season, O'Donnell climbed into fourth-place in program single-season history, surpassing Lauren Thomas '14 (170).
