OSWEGO, N.Y. -- A tough shooting night from beyond the arc by the Elmira College men's basketball team, along with a stellar offensive effort by Oswego State, resulted in a 106-67 setback for the Soaring Eagles in the opening round of the Max Ziel Tournament, hosted by the Lakers of Oswego.

Fourth-year guard Justin Porrett '19 paced the Purple and Gold with his third double-double of the season, as the Dumont, New Jersey, native produced a team highs of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Porrett was 4-11 from the field and a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe.

Shawn Backus '21 also finished in double figures with 11 points on 4-9 shooting from the floor, including a 1-2 mark from 3-point range.

Elmira's bench was responsible for 27 of the team's points, as Jeremy Every '20 and Jesse Adelson combined for 13 points. Every finished with seven buckets and a pair of assists, while Adelson went 2-4 from the field with a 1-2 mark from beyond the arc.

Oswego opened the contest with a 12-0 run, which set the tone in the first half. However, Elmira was able to claw its way to within six points, 23-17, behind an old-fashioned 3-point play by Adelson and a traditional 3-ball by Kyle McCreery '20 at 12:26.

Unfortunately, the six-point deficit was as close as Elmira would get to the Lakers, as the hosts went on to see their lead balloon to 18 points heading into the halftime break, 51-33. Oswego went on to control the second half and march away with a 39-point win.
