ARLINGTON, Va. -- An early deficit proved to be too much for the Elmira College Women's Basketball team to overcome on Saturday evening, as the Soaring Eagles dropped their final contest of the Pablo Coto Tip-off Tournament to the Bears of Ursinus College by a final score of 62-53.
Despite outscoring the Bears by a 32-27 margin in the second half of play, a 14-point, first-half deficit was too much for the Purple and Gold to overcome.
Lindsey Heaton '19 dropped a team-high 19 points on 7-for-13 (53.8%) shooting from the floor while adding six rebounds. After her pair of stellar scoring performances over the two-day event, Heaton was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Rachel Vespucci '19 and
Lauren Franklin '20 rounded out the Purple and Gold's double-digit point scorers, with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Ursinus had four players finish in double figures, paced by Lydia Konstanzer, who tallied a game-high 26 points.
The Bears came out firing in the first quarter and quickly jumped out to 13-4 lead. The Soaring Eagles were able to halt the barrage after Heaton drained a shot from behind the arc to cut the deficit to six at 15-9. EC battled from there, eventually having the final say of the opening quarter as
Bridget Yaw '20 found Vespucci in the paint for an easy finish to make it 20-15 heading into the second period of action.
EC struggled to find its offensive flow in the second quarter as the Bears held the Purple and Gold to six points The Soaring Eagles fared better in the early goings of the quarter as
Lauren Franklin cut the deficit to 20-17 after a smooth finish. The teams traded blows from there, but the Bears offense came alive with just under five minutes left to play, as Ursinus used an 8-0 run to jump out to a 33-20 lead and headed into the halftime break with a 35-21 edge.
The Purple and Gold battled back in the third quarter, using a 9-0 run that spanned over three minutes to cut the Bears lead to 39-30. Ursinus regained the momentum however, and took a 48-35 lead into the final quarter. Elmira surged back into the game as the clock wound down cutting the Bears lead to seven at 57-50 on a trey from Heaton. That was as close as the Soaring Eagles came however, as Ursinus held on for the victory.
