Last Week: The Soaring Eagles had a busy weekend of road competition on Saturday and Sunday, as Elmira squeezed in four games over the two-day stretch. EC began the busy slate with a pair of setbacks to York College of Pennsylvania, falling in the opener by a 22-10 final score, before dropping the finale, 16-1. Despite taking the loss, the Soaring Eagles had their best offensive performance of the season in the first game, as the team posted season highs in hits (12), runs (10), RBIs (9) and doubles (4). The opener against the Spartans was highlighted by a three-run homer from sophomore Jack Volpe '20, the first of his career. Elmira then battled Frostburg State to a 5-4 contest to begin play on Sunday, with the Bobcats walking off in the ninth on an RBI single. To close out play for the weekend, the Purple and Gold dropped an 11-5 decision to Stevenson University on their home diamond at Sugar Field.

Next Game: The EC men will have nine days to rest before welcoming the Rochester Institute of Technology to Dunn Field on Tuesday, March 20, for Elmira's 2018 home opener. The non-conference tilt is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.

Last Week: Elmira kicked off the competition portion of its 2018 schedule by taking top honors at the EC Winter Cheer Challenge, the Soaring Eagles' first-ever home collegiate competition, on Sunday at the Murray Athletic Center. EC topped RIT in the All-Girl Advanced division with a final score of 82.35 at the one-day event, compared to the Tigers' score of 64.45. The Soaring Eagles bested RIT in all three facets of the judges' scoring, as Elmira logged higher scores in stunts (24.00-to-18.50), tumbling/jumps (28.60-to-24.20) and overall performance (30.00-to-22.00).

Next Game: EC will head to National Harbor, Maryland, on Saturday and Sunday, March 17-18, to take part in the Battle at the Capitol. The two-day event will take place at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center and is slated to begin at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday.

Women's Ice Hockey (24-2-2, 15-0-1 UCHC)
Last Week: For the third time in the past four seasons, the nationally-ranked EC women's ice hockey team advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament with a 2-0 win over Adrian College on Saturday at the Murray Athletic Center. Both teams were evenly matched, as the score sat tied at 0-0 after two periods of play. Elmira finally broke through at the 13:28 mark of the third with a goal from Sarah Hughson '18. Despite some strong pressure from the Bulldogs, the 2017 NCAA Tournament runners-up, Elmira held strong and secured the victory with an empty-net tally from Maddie Evangelous '19 with 15 ticks left on the clock. Senior Louisa Lippiatt Durnell '18 was credited with an assist on Hughson's game-winner, making the East Sussex, England, native just the 12th Soaring Eagles to amass 100 career points. Kelcey Crawford '18 made 26 saves in a complete-game effort to improve to 21-2-2 this season.

Next Game: The Elmira women will head to Northfield, Vermont, on Friday, March 16, for a semifinal bout against long-time rival Plattsburgh State. The Soaring Eagles and Cardinals are slated to take flight at 3:30 p.m. at the Kreitzberg Arena on the campus of Norwich University.

Last Week: The Soaring Eagles fell in non-conference action to SUNY Cobleskill by a 12-2 final score in EC's 2018 home opener at nearby Notre Dame High School on Saturday. In his first bout of the season following the end of the men's ice hockey campaign, dual-sport student-athlete Kevin DiMagno '20 netted his first career goal, in addition to picking up a team-high eight ground balls against the Tigers. Jacob Magnoli '18 continued his strong start to the year with his second goal of the season. Freshman goalie Richie Cameron '21 made seven saves in his first collegiate start. Cam Brickey '19 caused three turnovers in the contest, which increased his per-game average to an Empire 8 Conference-best 3.50 this season.

Last Week: The Soaring Eagles fell to both Keuka College and Oswego State in back-to-back non-conference contests on Saturday and Sunday. Elmira opened play over the weekend with a 21-11 setback on the road against the Wolves. In the last game of the weekend, the Lakers of Oswego State jumped out to an early lead against EC and secured a 24-1 triumph at the Ernie Davis Academy on Sunday afternoon. Rachael Goetz '20 was the lone Soaring Eagle to tally a point in both games, finishing with one goal and one assist. Danielle Goddard '20 and Hayley Baker '19 led the Purple and Gold with three goals over the weekend. Goddard logged all three goals against Keuka on Saturday for her first career hat-trick.

Men's Volleyball (15-7, 3-2 UVC)
Last Week: The No. 15-ranked EC men were swept at a United Volleyball Conference (UVC) tri-match, hosted by New York University, over the weekend. On Saturday, the Soaring Eagles suffered a straight-set loss to No. 8 NYU at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility. In the finale, Elmira took one set from No. 2 Stevens Institute of Technology the following morning, but ultimately fell by a 3-1 final score. Ryan McDonough '19 led the Purple and Gold with 20 kills and a .302 hitting percentage. Sophomore Landon Miller '20 ended the weekend with 11 kills and a team-best five blocks, while owning a .286 hitting percentage. Jeremy Best '19 accounted for 58 of Elmira's 61 assists at the tri-match, which gives him a UVC-best 842 this season.

Next Game: Elmira's will take a short hiatus from conference competition this weekend, as it heads to Rochester, New York, on Saturday, March 17, to take part in the St. John Fisher Invitational. EC will battle Hiram College at 1:00 p.m., before taking on Baruch College at 3:00 p.m. Both contests will serve as rematches for the Soaring Eagles.
