PINE VALLEY, N.Y. --
Despite wins at the top two spots in both singles and doubles play, the Elmira College women's tennis team was unable to close out Saturday's match on top, as the Soaring Eagles fell to the College at Brockport, 5-4.

EC took the first two doubles matches of the day to pull out to an early 2-1 lead over the Golden Eagles. The top doubles tandem of Megan Fitzgerald '18 and Katy Jewett '21 rolled to an 8-2 win over Brockport's No. 1 team of Autumne Venturino and Kelsey Shanahan. At No. 2 doubles, juniors Sarah Hill '19 and Danielle Bliss '19 teamed up for the first time this season and posted an 8-4 triumph.

Momentum was in favor of the Soaring Eagles after Fitzgerald, who was voted to the Empire 8 All-Conference Second Team in the fall, cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory at first singles. Hill then came up with a critical win for the Purple and Gold, as she bumped up two spots in the lineup from No. 4 to No. 2 and eked out a 6-2, 7-5 straight-set win over Brockport's Zoe Sharp.

Up 4-1, Elmira needed only one more win to take the match, but the Golden Eagles ended the day with four straight singles victories to complete the comeback. Eliza Johnson '21 and Cassie Brown '21 both battled to a tiebreaker at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively, but both freshmen were dealt narrow losses in the third set.
