Last Week: The Soaring Eagles began Empire 8 Conference play with a three losses against St, John Fisher College in the two teams' season series. The first two contests featured pitching battles, as neither team scored more than five runs in either game. Conor Bawiec '18 started the opener for EC and pitched 7.0 innings and allowed four earned runs, while fanning eight batters in the 4-0 setback. In the second contest of the doubleheader, came close to executing a three-run comeback in the seventh inning, plating two with zero outs. Unfortunately for Elmira, that would be the end of its run production, as the Soaring Eagles fell, 5-2. The finale saw the Cardinals put together a complete-game effort, as they earned a 14-5 win. Dennis Rudolph '18 was the lone Soaring Eagle to post a hit in each game of the series, which extended his hit streak to seven games.

Next Game: The Soaring Eagles continue conference play on Wednesday, March 28, when they battle the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. The road bout is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. at Dobbelaar Field. Â

Last Week: EC kicked off the E8 portion of its schedule with a 14-2 setback against Alfred University on Saturday at Notre Dame High School. The Soaring Eagles began the contest strong by taking a 1-0 into the second quarter and trailing by just two, 3-1, heading into the halftime break. The Saxons, the second-highest scoring team in the conference, came alive in the second half, outscoring Elmira by an 11-1 margin to close out the contest. Kevin DiMagno '20 and Nevin Olney '18 combined to stand as EC's two goal scoring. DiMagno also led the team with five faceoff wins in addition to scooping up eight groundballs. Cam Brickey '19 also had a strong outing with team-highs in groundballs (10) and caused turnovers (4). Jacob Mattice '21 made the start for the Soaring Eagles and posted 17 saves in 54:06 minutes played.

Next Game: The Elmira men hit the road for their next contest, as they head to Union, New Jersey, on Wednesday, March 28, for a non-league tilt against Kean University. The opening draw for the bout is scheduled to take place at 7:00p.m. at the Kean Alumni Stadium.

Women's Lacrosse (1-5, 1-0 E8)
Last Week: Elmira kicked off Empire 8 play in a big way on Saturday, March 24, as the Purple and Gold defeated Alfred, 19-6, to earn their first win of the 2018 campaign. The Soaring Eagles held the lead for all but 39 seconds in the bout, in addition to scoring 13 first-half goals, more than the team had scored in a complete game all season. Hayley Baker '19 had a career performance in the win, as she tallied career-best marks in both points (9) and goals (3). EC also benefited from the recent addition of a few members of Elmira's NCAA runner-up women's ice hockey team, as Sarah Hughson '18 and Kelcey Crawford '18 immediately made their presences known. Hughson tallied five points (2g-3a) to goal along with a game-high eight caused turnovers and seven groundballs, while Crawford tied her classmate with seven groundballs of her own. Kacie Pierce '21 made the start for Elmira and played a complete game to earn her first collegiate victory.

Last Week: The EC softball team began the 2018 campaign with a bang this past weekend, as it went 2-1 in three games played at Eldridge Park Stadium. The season started with a 5-2 victory over Hilbert College on a frigid Friday, which prompted the second bout of the doubleheader to be canceled. Elmira then split a twin bill versus Cazenovia College, as EC cruised to a 14-2 triumph in the opener on Sunday, before falling, 5-3, in the nightcap. Maddy Johnson '19 put on a clinic in the three games, as she went 9-for-10 from the plate for a whopping .900 batting average on her way to earning E8 Player of the Week status. Both Carolyn Corcoran '19 and Hannah Lundgren '18 also had great performances. Corcoran started both games against the Wildcats on Sunday and tallied five RBIs in the doubleheader, which stands has half of her career total coming into the weekend. Lundgren posted her first multi-RBI bout in the 14-2 win, with three against Caz. McKenzie Slaven started on the mound in Elmira's win on Sunday and went all 5.0 innings and struck out four, while allowing just two runs. In recognition of her play, Slaven was named the Empire 8 Pitcher of the Week.

Men's Volleyball (19-7, 5-2 UVC)
Last Week: The Elmira men went a perfect 2-0 at a United Volleyball Conference (UVC) tri-match, hosted by St. John Fisher College this past weekend. The Soaring Eagles defeated the host Cardinals by a 3-1 final score in the opening match of the meet. Jose Malave '21 paced the Purple and Gold with a season-high 16 kills and 12 digs for his fifth double-double of the season. Matthew Buffum '18 floored 10 kills with a stellar .563 attack percentage. In the second match of the weekend, EC orchestrated a thrilling two-set-to-none comeback against long-time foe Nazareth College in the second match of the weekend. For the second consecutive bout, Malave paced the team with 16 kills. Buffum also cracked double-digits with 14 kills. The win over Naz clinched a UVC Tournament berth for the Purple and Gold, its first since 2015. In recognition of their strong play, Malave was named an EC Athlete of the Week and Buffum was tabbed as the E8, UVC and AVCA Player of the Week.

Next Game: Elmira wraps up conference play on Friday and Saturday, March 30-31, with a UVC tri-match at Speidel Gymnasium. EC will begin the event with a 5:00 p.m. bout against Vassar College on Friday, before closing play with a 2:30 p.m. match against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology the following day.
