Last Week: Elmira picked up their first win of the season this past weekend in thrilling fashion, as the Purple and Gold outlasted Houghton on the road, 11-10. The Soaring Eagles jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but the host Highlanders eventually leveled the contest at 10-10 with 2:05 left in regulation. EC's Seth Amstein '19 played the hero, as his only shot of the game found the back of the cage with 56 seconds to play, resulting in the one-goal victory. Although Amstein stole the headlines, Jacob Magnoli '18 deserved a great deal of credit in helping Elmira secure the win. Magnoli exploded for a career-high five goals, one of which was unassisted and one other that was scored on a man-up opportunity. Kevin DiMagno '20 turned in a solid all-around performance with four points (2g-2a), 14 ground balls and a 10-for-18 showing in faceoffs. Nevin Olney '18 and Colby Runk '18 chipped in with four and three points, respectively. On the defensive end of things, Cam Brickey '19 paced EC with five caused turnovers and added another six ground balls to his stat line. In net, Jacob Mattice '21 earned his first victory of the season by making 12 saves, including a last-second stop in the final moments of regulation to preserve the one-goal win for the Soaring Eagles.  Â

Softball (3-4, 1-3 E8)
Last Week: Rainy conditions forced a handful of changes to the Elmira schedule this past week, although the Soaring Eagles were able to sneak in an Empire 8 doubleheader on the road against Houghton. Elmira earned an 8-4 win in game one, before falling by one run in the nightcap, 3-2. Elmira nearly pulled off the series sweep of the Highlanders, as an RBI triple by Emily Clark '19 in the fourth inning and a fielding error by Houghton in the seventh inning helped EC erase a 1-0 deficit and take a 2-1 lead with just half an inning to play. Unfortunately, a pair of singles in the bottom of the seventh inning vaulted Houghton to a 3-2 comeback win. McKenzie Slaven '20 was the winning pitcher in game one, as the local product of Horseheads, New York, tossed a full 7.0 innings of four-run ball, three of which were earned. Slaven struck out eight batters in the win, a season high for the sophomore pitcher. Maddy Johnson '19 and Sarah Garner '20 fueled the Elmira offense in game one, as the duo combined for a 7-for-9 showing at the plate with two RBIs and three runs scored. Additionally, Sam Chadbourne '19 launched her first career home run in the win, a solo shot that came in the top of the third inning.

Last Week: EC dropped its lone match of the week, a 7-2 decision at home to Hartwick. The loss was Elmira's first conference setback of the season, while the Hawks solidified their spot as one of the league's top three teams. Elmira's two points came from the upper half of its singles lineup, as Patrick Tracey '18 and Stephen Gervase '20 picked up wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, respectively. Tracey made routine work of his opponent with a 6-3, 6-2 win, which helped the Bardonia, New York, native extend his winning streak in singles action to six straight matches. The win also moved Tracey into a two-way tie for second place in EC history for career singles wins (35) with former teammate, Austin Mansell '16. Gervase's match was a thriller, as he edged his opponent in three highly competitive sets. After dropping the first set, 4-6, Gervase rallied in the second for a 6-4 win, before prevailing in a third-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (2). The singles win extended Gervase's winning streak in singles to four matches.
